Biography
Archibald was born on 4 June and baptized 14 July 1850, In Airdrie or New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland. His parents were James Forsyth and Agnes McDonald. [1]
In 1851 Archibald was living New Monkland, the youngest, 9 months old, of 5 children. [2]
In 1861 Archi is 10 years old, the son of James and Agens, born in New Monkland, living at San Burn in Muiravonside, Stirlingshire, Scotland. He is a scholar.[3][4]
in 1871 Archi is living with his parents, James and Agnes. He was born in Airdrie. Address is Gleabad farm in Muiravonside, Stirlingshire, Scotland and he works as a minor. [5]
On April 26, 1878 Archibald marries Agnes (Nancy) Irvine. His occupation is given as a draper and hers as a dressmaker. He is 27 and she is 29, both were living in Maddiston, Polmont, Scotland.[6]
Family Search tells us: Drapers, or linen drapers, used to be the supervisors of the makers of woolen and other types of cloth since only they were allowed to buy from the manufacturers or to import it. The wholesale draper (or dealer) would buy imported cloths from the merchants, and also British-produced goods from manufacturers in, say Manchester or Paisley. He acted as the middleman by reselling these to the retail linen drapers throughout his chosen territory in Britain, through his travelers (traveling salesmen). Hurley (The Book of Trades or Library of the Useful Arts. Vol III. Wiltshire Family History Society, 1994) lists the specialties of each of the manufacturing towns in 1818.[7]
In 1881 we find Archi and Agnes still living in Muiravonside, Maddiston, Stirlingshire and his occupation is still that of a draper. They have 2 children now, a one-year-old, my grandfather, and a three-week-old. This census says he was born in Watston, Larnark [8][9]
In 1891 Archi and Agnes are still living in the same place and they have 4 children, Archi is now a News Agent. and in 1901 we also find him here as a News Agent. I assume this was a person that sold newspapers.[10][11]
In 1896 Their 2nd son, John Irvine Thompson Forsythwas killed in a boiler Explosion. This news was reported in The Falkirk Herald and Midland Counties Journal, July 20, 1896 Page 4, 6th Col 'see son's profile'
1901 Census, Archibald and family are living at Lily Bank and he is employed as a newsagent on his own account, from home.
1911 Census finds Archibald with Agnes and 2 sons, Peter, 26 and Matthew 24/ They are living at Lily Bank, a home with 4 rooms that have 1 or more windows. He is a Newsagent, working on his own account. The 2 sons are Joiners. His other son, James had immigrated already. [12]
In 1916 their 4th son, Peter William Irvine Forsyth was killed at the battle of the Somme, Picardie, France. See Peter's profile for more information. 'see son's profile'
