  James Whyte was born in 1814 at Milnathort, Orwell in Kinrosshire and baptised 17Apr1814 - the son of Robert and Jean Whyte nee Marshall. No other children have been found for this couple. In the 1841 Census of the village of Milnathort, District 3, at 8 New Road lived - James Whyte, a shoemaker, aged 25 with his wife Jane also 25. Two children - Jannet, aged 2 and Robert aged 8 months also resided there. In the 1851 Census of the village of Milnathort, District 2, p45 - James Whyte, Head, married, aged 36 born Orwell, Master Shoemaker employing 3 men. Jane, wife, aged 38 born Orwell - with children Robert, aged 10, student born Orwell David, aged 8, student born Orwell Andrew, aged 4, student born Orwell and Jane, aged 1, born Orwell. Their oldest child, daughter Janet Whyte is now aged 12 and living with her grandmother Janet Mailer aged 66. (Census page states Janet Snr Born Forgandenny in Perthshire). In the 1861 Census the family is living at Edinburgh Head, St Ninians in Stirling. James Whyte Head 46 Shoe Maker Jane Whyte Wife 48 Dressmaker David M Son 18 Currier Andrew C Son 14 Jane M Daughter 11 Helen Daughter 6 and James Son 4 - all scholars, born Milnathort. Ten years later in 1871 James and Jane and family are living in 'New House' at St Ninians in Stirling. James is now a Master Shoemaker aged 56 while Jane is aged 58. Daughter Helen is 16 and son James is a Clerk aged 14 years. In 1881 Census, Reg. District - Stirling. No 490, Book 12, page 13 Address - 59 Corrane St, Stirling James WHYTE, head, married, aged 66, Shoemaker, born Orwell, Kinrosshire Jane WHYTE, wife, married, aged 68, born Milnathort, Kinrosshire Michael B(ruce). FORSYTH, s-in-law, married, aged 24, Number taker railway clearing, born Keith, Banffshire Helen FORSYTH, daughter, married, aged 25, born Milnathort, Kinrosshire. In the 1891 Census, Reg Dist - Logie, Perth Dist No 374, Book 10, page 2 Address - Causewayhead House, Causewayhead James WHYTE, head, married, aged 76, shoemaker, born Orwell, Kinrosshire Jane WHYTE, wife, married, aged 78, born Orwell, Kinrosshire James FORSYTH, grandson, aged 9, scholar, born Stirling Robert Whyte FORSYTH, grandson, aged 6, scholar, born Logie, Clackmannanshire. Jane died before her husband James in 1891. James Whyte died 9Feb1900 at 392a Dundyvan Road, Coatbridge. He was formerly a Shoe Maker. He was aged 85 years and died of Senile Debility and Gangrene. Again son-in-law M.B. Forsyth was informant. James' parents are listed as Robert Whyte (Shepherd) and Jean Marshall.
