Tragic Death
A dreadful accident occurred on the Ashford Road, near the 19 mile peg, in the early hours of sunday morning last. It appears that Mr Phil Holder and Mr Sylvester Forsyth who had attended a dance held in the hall at Dinton Vale, on Saturday night, were returning home, both riding horses. When about the 19 mile peg, and whilst cantering quietly along, Mr Holder's horse stimbled and fell. The rider was thrown violently to the ground but to make matters worse, the horse rolled right on top of it's rider crushing him badly. Mr Forsyth immediately dismounted and went to his comrades assistance. He at once saw that the mate was in a serious condition, and that the weight of the animal must be removed from the unfortunate man's body. Luckily, Mr Percy Farnant drove up in his sulky, and with his assistance Holder was exctricated from his perilous position. Forsyth was horrified to learn that his companion was cruelly smashed and was unconscious. In view of this, it was decided to convey him to the Dinton Vale Hotel and telephone for medical aid. The injured man was accordingly lifted into the sulky and conveyed to the hotel..
A doctor from Inverell arrived shortly afterwards, only to diagnose the case as hopeless. The skull had been badly fractured, the right jaw broken and severe internal injuries inflicted. He never regained consciousness, and expired the same night. The fatality cased quite a gloom to descend over the locality. It was only recently that a young lady had been thrown from a horse in the same vicinity and killed, and for a second tragedy to happen so soon was too much for the nerves of the residents. The deceased was in the full bloom of manhood, being 24 years of age. He was the youngest son of Mrs M Holder, of Bukkulla and was a fine stamp of Australian manhood. He was extremely popular with all sections of the community and his untimely and tragic ending is to be deplored. He is survived by his mother, two brothers and 10 sisters. Their names are George Holder (Qld), Archie Holder (Bukkulla), Mrs W Thompson (Qld), Mrs J Thompson (Rocky Creek), Mrs T Marchant (North Coast), Mrs J Fermor (Mandola), Mrs W Hanson (Bukkulla), Mrs W Slattery (Scone), Mrs McLetchie (Murrurrundi), Mrs H Moffitt (Bukkulla), Mrs A Glanville (Sydney) and Mrs Sharp (Bukkulla)..
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock when the remains were laid to rest in the Dinton Vale cemetery. The cortage was exceptionally langeone, people from all parts of the district assembling at the graveside to pay their last respects to an estimable young son. the Rev C A Baker, Vicar of Ashford, recited the burial service, and also gave a brief address..
An enquiry into the cause of the accident will be conductedd by the Coroner (Mr Jas McIlveen) on Friday morning next. .
