  James Alexander Forsyth was christened 4Dec1820 at Huntly, Aberdeen the second son of Robert and Cathrine Forsyth who had been married 30Jun1817 also at Huntly. Their other children were William ch 9Jan1818, John ch 29Dec1822, Jan chr 16Jan1825, Robert ch 23Nov1829, and Michael Bruce ch 9Sep1832 - all at Huntly. In the 1841 Census at Gallowgate in Aberdeen, James Forsyth is aged 20 years and a Shoe Maker, living with William Paterson, a Boot Closer, aged 40. With them is Henry Sutherland, a Cork Cutter, aged 28 and ChristianReid, a 21 year old Lint Spinner. In the 1851 Keith Census, Book 1, p11 - address - Cross Street Robert Forsyth, Head, widower, aged 56, journeyman/carrier, born Keith, Banffshire James (John on Transcription) Alexander Forsyth, son, aged 30, journeyman/shoemaker, born Huntly, Aberdeen Robert Forsyth, son, aged 21, solicitor/writing clerk,born Huntly, Aberdeen Michael Bruce Forsyth, son, aged 18, solicitor/writing clerk, born Huntly, Aberdeen. A House Servant, Mary Thomson, aged 19 lives with the family. In the 1851 Keith Census, Book 5, p1 - Address - Main Street Jane Shand, head, widower, aged 62, feuar (sic), born Inveravon Ann Shand, visitor, aged 20, born Grange Isabella Shand, visitor, aged 9, born Keith, Banffshire. According to photocopy of original handwritten record in Keith dd 2Aug1851 "James Alexander Forsyth and Ann Shand were this day matrimonially contracted and after the publication of bans, married on 23rd inst they being both in this parish". According to photocopy of original handwritten record in Keith dd 17Jun1852, "James Alexander, lawful son of James Alexander Forsyth shoemaker in Keith and his wife Ann Shand was born the 22nd inst and baptised this day. Witnesses James Kilmaw Keith and Jane Cuthbert Fife Keith". He was their first child - followed by Ann, ch 30Apr1854, Michael Bruce b 13Nov1856, William b 1May1859, Margaret b 18Oct1862, Robert b 8Apr1865 and John Watt b 16Oct1869. All children were born in Keith, Co Banff. In the 1861 Keith Census, Book 4, p 35 - Address - Back Street James Alexander Forsyth, head, aged 49, post messenger, born Huntly, Aberdeen Ann Forsyth, wife aged 29, born Grange, Banffshire Michael Bruce Forsyth, son aged 4, born Keith, Banffshire William Forsyth, son aged 1, born Keith, Banffshire. In the 1871 Census James and Ann are still living in Keith with four of their children - Bruce 14, Maggie 8, Robert 5 and John aged 1 - all at school. James is a 50 year old Foot Postman. In the 1881 Census for Keith (FHL Film 0203440 GRO ref Vol 159 EnumDist 2 p1) James Forsyth aged 60 b Huntly, Aberdeen - Head of Household - Occupation Post Runner to Banff Ann Forsyth aged 48 b Grange Maggie Forsyth aged 17 b Keith - daughter of Head John aged 11 also b Keith - Still at School. The family lived at 1 Mid Street, Keith in Banff. In 1891 James A Forsyth states he is Head of the Household and a widower (!) aged 70 and a Retired Postman.With him is his daughter Margaret Reid aged 26 and her two sons William 3 and Henry G 3 months. The boys were born at Glasgow, Lanarkshire. The family is living at 177b Mid St, Keith. The "Banffshire Herald" of 25Jan1896 mentions the death of James Forsyth, Rural postman (retired) at Keith. He was Post Runner between Keith and Banff in 1855 until he retired in 1883. James died at 68 Spittal, Aberdeen on 20Jan1896. He was aged 75 and died of Senile Decay as certified by Alexander Mitchell. MD. His daughter Margaret Reid was the informant. His widow Ann lived for another five years, dying 10Nov1901.
