"SUICIDE FINDING IN POISON DEATH A verdict of suicide was returned by the Deputy Coroner (Mr. R. C. Newton) at Horsham on Friday after an inquest into the death of James Forsyth (58), of Noradjuha, who died on February 28..
Mr. Newton found that Forsythe died from the effects of strychnine, wilfully administered by himself at Noradjuha. He died in Wimmera Base Hospital. Mr. W. S. McDonald, grazier, of Nuradjuha, said that when he heard Forsyth was in ill health he visited him at his home about 9 p.m. on February 27. Forsyth was quiet and difficult to talk to. When they were called in to have a cup of tea about 10:30 p.m., Forsyth excused himself and went outside the gate, added Mr. McDonald. He was away about three minutes. Soon after he complained about cramps in his legs. He was taken to hospital. Mr.McDonald said that Forsyth had never given him any indication that he would take his own life. He did not believe Forsyth was in financial difficulties as he had previosly sold £600 worth of sheep to him..
CALLED TO HOUSE.
Mr L. W, McDonald, grazier, of Noradjuha, said that in response to a message he went to Forsythe's house on February 27 about 10 p.m. Mrs. Forsyth informed him that her husband was ill. He went to Horsham and made arrangements with Dr. Jones to see Forsyth the next morning. When he returned about 12.30 a.m. he said it appeared that Forsyth had taken poison. Mr. McDonald said Forsyth had never given any indication to him that he would take his own life. He did not think Forsyth was in fin- ancial difficulties. Dr. L. D.Gilsenan, a resident medical officer at the Wimmera Base Hospital, said he treated Forsyth about 1:45 a.m. on February 28. Forsyth died at 2:45 a.m. After a post mortem he said the general congestion of the organs suggested an asphyxial cause of death. Mr. Douglas William Wilson, a chemist, of Hoddle Street, Essendon, gave evidence of analysing Forsyth's stomach contents. He said it contained a lethal amount of strychnine. Dr. R. Hutton-Jones, of Horsham, said he examined Forsyth on February 23 and found him in a very bad mental state, depressed and anxious. He said he regarded Forsyth's condition as urgent and made arrangements for him to have specialised treatment in Melbourne on March 3. First Constable J. Slater, of Horsham Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.".
