Taxi Driver Committed for Trial.
The City Coroner (Mr. Oram) yesterday committed William Mcpherson, 39, taxi-driver, of Halloran-street, Leichhardt, for trial, on a charge of manslaughter. Mr. Oram had found that James McLean, 32, of Anzac-parade, South Kensington, relief worker, died from injuries received when he was knocked down by a taxi-cab, negligently driven by Mcpherson, at the intersection of Anzac parade and Hannan-lane, South Kensington.
The evidence was that on the night of January l8, McLean was walking along the side of the road in Anzac-parade, South Ken- sington, where no proper footpaths, are pro- vided. He was pushing a perambulator con- taining two children, and his wife and daughters were walking alongside him. The taxi-cab struck McLean, killing him instantly. The perambulator was pushed out of the road of the taxi, and the children in it escaped injury.
Mr. W. Parker appeared for the relatives of McLean, and Mr. L. J. Herron (Instructed by Messrs. Mccaw, Moray, and Co.) for Mcpherson.
