Notes |
- My Grandmother, Jean Mailer or (Jane Mailler on her birth certificate) Forsyth was born 19Feb1889 at 11pm at 95 Lower Bridge St, Stirling, Scotland. Jean was one of seven children - the others were Andrew, Albert and Bruce (they both drowned at an early age), Helen (known as Nellie), Ann (known as Nan) and James (who went to America).
Their parents were Michael Bruce and Helen Whyte Forsyth who had been married on 6Jan1881 at 59 Corrane St, Stirling. Banns according to the forms of the United Presbyterian Church had been read. They were married by Robert Whyte (probably a relation), Minister of Lauriston Presbyterian Church, Edinburgh. Witnesses were David Bonella and Jane Thomson. Michael aged 24, signed his name. He was a bachelor working as a clerk at the Railway Clearing House. Helen signed her name stating she was a spinster aged 25. Details are from their marriage certificate.
In the 1891 Census Jean is named 'Jane'.
Family stories say that the family contained a number of religious ministers and church was frequently attended, sometimes three times in one day.
There is a Group Photo of about 30 unidentified persons with Michael and Helen Forsyth in the centre. The background of the photo appears to be a solid bluestone wall of a building with 2 large windows. Michael is a bearded man with collar and tie. Helen is also photographed sitting in high straight-backed chair wearing a long dress with fur stole and cameo at her neck with a long chain going down passed her waist.Michael and Helen appear to be of similar height.
Jean Forsyth was 28 years of age when she married Benjamin Martin Athol Pearce (always known as Jack) on 2May1919. They were married at 5 Phillips St, Paisley, Co. Renfrew after banns according to the Forms of the United Free Church of Scotland by James Bonnar Russell, Minister of Canal St U.F. Ch of Scotland, Paisley. Witnesses were Michael Bruce Forsyth Jnr and Helen Whyte Forsyth.
She had lived at 14 Haley St, Alms Hill, Manchester for a time. She also worked as a clerkess in London. Jean was a real fashion plate - there are several photographs of her as a young woman in very stylish dress. She was known to smoke coloured cigarettes! A story tells of the price of fresh eggs being 10 pence each. The big decision after purchasing one, was how you were going to cook it and which night you were going to eat it. Her handwriting was beautiful, later keeping meticulous ledgers of the household expenses when she was married. It was only five months from the time Jack was discharged from hospital after being wounded at Etaples, France until their marriage.
A passport was issued to Jack, Jean and daughter Helene on 10Oct1922 by N.Z authorities. His physical description is - 5' 7" tall with ordinary forehead and nose, blue eyes, straight nose, auburn hair, fair complexion and oval face, aged 31. He is described as Natural born British Subject. Jean is aged 32, 5' 6 1/2" tall with high forehead, blue eyes, ordinary nose, medium mouth and chin, dark hair and complexion and oval face. Both Jack and Jean signed their names in full. The passport states they were travelling to England.
Jean was a very stylish dresser all her life. There are a number of photos. One is of Jean and one of her sisters. They are both dressed in trench coats with great hats tipped at a jaunty angle. Jean has a tie around her neck. Another photo has Jean in full length fur coat, another with stylish suit with fur collar. Both are signed by Jean's beautiful handwriting.
Jean dealt with life as it came. To travel to N.Z. as a young war bride must have been a big adventure. She remained lifelong friends with one of the other young brides. Her big trip home with baby Helene in the early 1920s was the last time she ever saw her native Scotland although she always retained her soft Scottish burr
Jean loved nothing better than to get all dressed up in hat, gloves etc every Friday and travel by ferry from their home in Fairlight to Sydney city. She often met friends and family for lunch. She was full of fun in a refined way, with a wicked sense of humour. Jean liked a "weedram" of scotch occasionally.
Jean remained living in the family home with daughter Jean at 4 Francis St, Fairlight until her death on 27Dec1968 aged 79. Earlier Jean had been hit by a car. The resulting delayed shock surely contributed to her slow decline. She died after many months in a nursing home. This placed a great load on her family especially daughter Jean. It was so very sad to see such a beautiful lady's life end in such a way.
