      MALDON MURDER - 1984

A Victorian policeman was committed to trial on the 20th of March 1984, on a charge of murdering another officer. The Castlemaine Coroner, Mr Adams, SM, sent Senior Constable Leigh Michael Lawson, 27, for trial on a charge of murdering Senior Constable Lindsay James Forsythe at Maldon, near Castlemaine, on June 22. Senior Constable For syte's wife was also committed for trial on d similar charge. Mr Adams said the evidence suggested Mrs Gaylc Barbara Forsythe, 33, was an accessory before the fact. He found that Senior Constable Forsythe died of a haemorrhage from a gun shot wound inflicted by Senior Constable Lawson. "1 further find that Leigh Lawson and Gayle Forsythe did murder Lindsay James Forsythe," Mr Adams said. Both Mrs Forsythe and Senior Constable Lawson told the court they were innocent. Bail was formally refused. The court was told on Monday that the couple had an affair while Senior Constable Lawson was relieving at Maldon police station in January last year. Police alleged that Mrs Forsythe helped Senior Constable Lawson leave a deserted farmhouse after he was seriously wounded in a gun battle with Senior Constable Forsythe. Dr Jeffrey Mander of Bendigo, told the court that Senior Constable Lawson had been hit by at least three bullets. A ballistics expert, Senior Sergeant Jim Pattison, said the fatal shotgun blast had been fired from between 1.5 and two metres away from Senior Constable Forsythe. The .38 police service revolver in Senior Constable Forsythe's hand had contained five spent cartridges and one empty chamber.
