    • Glen Innes Examiner (NSW : 1908 - 1954) Saturday 14 March 1931 p 4
      An unusual accident occurred to
      seven-year-old Florence Fleming,
whose parents reside at Ross HilL
      (Inverell), when a pair of
      scissors; failing from a sew
      ing machine pierced her thigh,
severing a vein.- The flow of blood
      was temporarily stopped, but later
the girl was found lying in a pool of
blood. An operation had to be per
      formed in a local hospital.

      The Inverell Times (NSW : 1899 - 1954) Wednesday 11 March 1931 p 1
      PECULIAR ACCIDENT
      Scissors Pierce Vein
      Little Girl's Plight
On Monday last a peculiar acci
      dent befel Florence Fleming, the
      seven-year-old daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. T. Fleming, of Ross Hill,
which though at the time appear- :
ed trivial, proved serious and may
have resulted in the little girl's
      death.
It appears that Mrs. Fleming was
removing a frock from the machine,
and, in doing so, a pair of scissors,
      concealed under the garment, were
dragged off the machine and, failing
      point-downwards, pierced the little
girl's thigh, inflicting a small puncture.
When the scissors were removed, a
strong stream of blood spurted from
the wound and it was evident that a
vein had been pierced. 'The haemor
rhage was stopped, however, and the
      girl was put to bed.
Later, she called to her father for
a drink, and when taking it remarked
that, there was a lot of blood on her-
      bed. On investigating, Mr. Fleming
was horrified to discover that the
kiddie was lying in a pool of blood,
whilst the sheets near her thigh were
saturated. A doctor was speedily call
ed and the child was removed to In-
      nishowen private hospital, where a
      minor operation was performed yes
      terday.
      Inquiries this morning elicited that
the child, though weak, ws showing
      satisfactory progress.
