SHOCKING OCCURRENCE AT MARULAN. TWO PERSONS KILLED BY LIGHT NING.
A shocking occurrence took place at Marulan at 5 o'clock on Sunday evening during a heavy thunder storm. A swagman, whose name is unknown, called at the back door of Mr. S. Williams' residence at what is known as Old Marulan, and, Lloyd Williams, aged 14 years, went to the door to see what the man wanted As he opened the door there was a very vivid flash of lightning. It killed the strange man instantaneously and he fell dead on the verandah. Young Williams was also struck and he fell in the doorway unconscious and died within fifteen minutes. The lightning paseed through the hall and took a thin shaving off the stock of a loaded gun which was standing muzzle downwards against the wall, without exploding the weapon, and eventually found an exit through a window. Mr. H. 0 Brien, Coroner, held a magisteriat inquiry at Marulan yesterday and gave a finding of accidental death.
Isahella Alexander Williams., wife of Mr. S. Williams, deposed that her son was 14 years old; deceased and witness were sitting on a sofa in the dining room, and they saw a strange man passing the doer; he came to the back door, and deceased got up and went to speak to the man; there was a heavy storm at the time, with very vivid lightning; he was away about one minute, when there was a very vivid flash and a crash; she ran out and saw the deceased falling; he fell in the doorway, and she carried him in and went to her little eon, who was crying; the strange man was lying dead on the verandah ; her son was not dead when she picked him up; he was unconscious and lived about 15 minutes; the one flash must hare killed the both ; the flash also struck a gun inside the house and splintered the stock. Dr. Lawson deposed that the hair on the top of the boy's head was a little crisped, and there was a mark on the scalp something similar to the letter 8 ; there was some discolouration towards the rig" side of the face and behind the head; there were no marks on the body.
