Notes |
- Extracts from the Book "Lock Lomond to Australia 1862. The family of Peter & Jane Mc Intyre".
"Daniel Brodie was born on 23 April 1870,. the sixth child of Daniel and Violet Brodie. He came to Greenmount with his widowed mother and family after the tragic death of his father in 1874 and he lived there all his life. When Emu Creek
School opened in 1875 and Daniel wa s pupil there.
He married Kate Forsyth, daughter of Robert and Mary Annie Forsyth, in 1896 and they had five children: Daniel, Lorna (Hogg), Effie (Meibusch), Bob and Violet (Kemp). Bob was killed in the Second World War. The family lived in a house called
"Kananga" which is now the Greenmount Post Office.
Dan went to Brisbane and learnt accountancy and business management and with his brother Malcolm took over the general store in Greenmount from their mother. The business continued to grow despite a severe drought in 1902 when farm production
was nil. Providing fodder for the stock taxed the farmer's finances to the limit and many had to be financed by the store.
In 1917 the new brick building which replaced the original stor was totally destroyed by fire. Although only 10 feet away the original building escaped damage. Another brick building was built which in later years was also destroyed by fire.
His son, Daniel, joined the business and took over the Nobby store and is well remembered with his International Harvster Company agencies.
A provisional school was opened in Greenmount on 10 Septmber 1901 after Dan made an application on behalf of the families of the area requesting one as some of the children had to walk 7 miles to a school.
He was very interested in all community affairs and was fond of sport an children. He would accompany the schoolboys' cricket team when they played at other schools. He always took a gread interest in his church.
Daniel worked in V. Brodie 7 Co's business until his sudden death on 4 November 1924. He is buried in the Greenmount cemetery beside his mother. It was a very sad day when he pased away so suddenly so young.
Kate moved to Brisbane and lived in Amelia Street. Cppr[arpp. where there was always a wlcome for visiting relatives and friends. She died on 23 March 1954.
