- XTRACTS FROM THE BOOK "Lock Lomond, to Australai 1862. The Family of Peter & Jane Mc Intyre.
"Jane Brodie was born at Tarbet on Lochlomond, Scotland on 30 June 1861, the daughter of eldest of seven children of Daniel and Violet Brodie (Nee Mc Intyre). Jane was only a baby when she and her parents migrated to Queensland in 1862, with
the Mc Intyre family and other Scottish Highlanders who came out on the "Ocean Chief" seeking work as shepherds. Jane's parents found employment in Ipswich and the family lived there until 1874. After her father's death Jane, as the thirteen
year old, came with her mother and family to live with the Mc Intyre's at "Benvolick" and where she kept house for them for a few years while her mother started at store at The Siding, later Greenmount. That store was the start of a thriving
business and was in the bands of the Brodie family for three generations, V. Brodie & Co., the heart and soul of Greenmount township.
Jane married John Charles Allen at "Benvorlick" in 1880 and reared a family of two sons and two daughters. They worked and lived in a cottage on "Woodlawn" on the banks of Emu Creek, East Greenmount where their children, Thomas, who died aged
2 years 7 months, Violet, thomas William, Catherine May and John Charles, were born.
"Woodlawn" had been settled in 1868 by Thomas Allen, John Charles' father, and together they bought "Allendale" when john, jane and family later lived. They carried on grazing, dairying and cropping for many years. and gradually increased
their holdings.
At one stage, they took up country which had been forfieted by other settlers and been retrieved by the Crown. The block was rough range country on the Dividing Range, miles from "Woodlawn" and civilisation. To fulful the residence
conditions, Jane, with her first toddler and pregnant with her second child, and her younger sidter Teanie went to live there, in a slab hut with a dirt floor. on their own for months on end. They were going through had times and husbane,
John, had to remain on "Woodlawn". He used to bring rations and visit them at weekends.
Thomas Snr, Great Grandpa, died at "Woodlawn" in 1923 and Grandad (John) and Granny (Jane) stayed on for a few years before retiring to Toowoomba. They suffered hardships and some good fortune and were evidently not afraid of work. Grandad
and Granny were b oth keen followers of sport, particularly polo, cricket, and football. Grandad's forte was polo, he was an outstanding horseman. One of Granny 's fravourite hobbies was to crochet, some of which grand daughter, Lal Turrell,
still treasures.
John died on 25 April 1938 aged 79 years. Both are buried in the family plt in Drayton/Toowoomba cemetery.
They were strick bu kind and understanding grandparents, and very respected by their grandchildren and held in high regard by their many friends. They were prominent workers for St. andrews Presbyterian Church whilst they lived in Toowoomba.
Theirs was alway an open house.
