      CRITIC'S VIEW OF
      AUSTRALIAN ART
      From Our Staff Correspondent
      LONDON, Jan. 24. - The
Australian artists' ex- hibition now showing in London lacks a sense of completeness - the essence both of their scene and their artists' genius, says the Lon- don "Daily Telegraph" art critic, T. W. Earp.
The critic says that a robust expressionism is the prevailing tendency.
"But, unfortunately, ex- pressionism in its attempt to preserve the painter's first im
pulse is too apt to stop short at it," he says. "It is an approach without realisation and, thus, F. Williams's 'Tragic Landscape" and Mal- colm Horsley's "The General's Birthday Party," with their tantalising hint of genuine power, hardly go beyond rough studies.
"An ambitious effort is well rewarded in Roy de Maistre's elaborately com- posed semi-cubist 'Veiled Figure, Seated.' "
