Commander C. Codrington Forsyth, 1843. - Commander C Codrington Forsyth, lately promoted, entered the service in I827,and served the Jaseur, l8 guns, Captain Lyons, on the east coast of Africa, for the suppression of the slave trade. He then joined the Maidstone, 42 Commodor Sir C. M. Schombergh; from her he removed into the Warspite, 76, bearing the flag of Admiral Sir Thomas Baker. After serving in her a short time, he was appointed to the Beagle, surveying sloop, under Captain K. Fitzroy. Whilst in that vessel he assisted in the survey of the coast of South America, from the River Plate to Guayaquil, including the Falkland Islands, &c., and, in conjunction with two other midshipmen, surveyed a distance of 1700 miles of coast, in a small vessel of 14 tons, without any other assistance. He passed his examination for lieutenant in 1836, and joined the Pelorus, which proceeded to India, On this vessel's arrival on the station, a rupture being expected with the Burmese, he was detached with her boats to Rangoon, and, by his timely arrival, saved tho British Resident, Colonel Burney, and the masters of the Merchant vessels, from imprisonment. The Pelorus was then ordered to Australia and New Zealand. Whilst on these coasts, Commander Forsyth made many valuable additions to the charts by his surveys, and was sent, at the particular request of Sir J. Franklin, after a party of desperate convicts who had escaped from Van Diemen's Land; and after a narrow escape of his life, he saved part of them from destruction. In 1839 he again joined the Beagle, and for more than two years did the duty of lieutenant and assistant surveyor, in Command of her tender in the survey of Bass Straits, without receiving the pay of either officer, and was most handsomely recommended to the Admiralty by Sir J. Franklin and Sir James Stirling, for his services on the coast of Van Diemen's Land and Western Australia.
On the Beagle's return to England, in 1843, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, and appointed to the Helena, on the east coast of Africa, when he was continually away in command of her boats. On one occasion he captured an Arab slaver after some resistance, with eighty-two children on board, destined for the slave market of Muscat. In performing this service nine out of the pinnace's crew died from tile effects of fever. On the Helena's return from the Cape, the colonists being at war with the Kaffirs, the troop, in consequence of the drought and difficulty of obtaining supplies, were obliged to retreat to the mouth of the Great Fish River, where it was reported supplies might be landed, although it was much doubted from the heavy surf almost always prevailing on this dangerous coast. Lieut. Gen. Sir P. Maitland applied to the senior naval officer, Captain R. Gambier, for an Officer to superintend the debarkation of troops and stores, and survey and report on the coast, when Commander Forsyth was selected for this
service, from his knowledge of surveying and landing on open coast. On his arrival there he found the troops almost destitute of provisions, which he soon succeeded in landing in large quantities, which enabled the army again to advance against the Kaffirs ; for this service he Was strongly recommended to the Admiralty, and was officially informed by their lordships, through Rear-Admiral Dacres, that they had
made a favourable note of his name. On the arrival of Sir H. Pottinger and Sir G. Berkeley the troops again made a forward movement, when Commander Forsyth was requested to
proceed to the mouth of the Buffalo, and report as to the possibility of landing stores there. On his way thither with a small escort, he was nearly cut off by the enemy. At this place he was again successful in landing supplies under the most dangerous and difficult circumstances. He was repeatedly recommended through the commañder-in-chief, Rear-Admiral Dacres, for his valuable assistance and co-operation;and again by Sir Harry Smith, who states in his letters to Earl Grey, had it not been for the energy and perseverance displayed by this Officer in establishing these landing places, the army must have starved. He was also officially thanked by the admiral for his valuable surveys
Of this coast, and the commissary-general like-wise recommended him to the Treasury, for the valuable assistance he had rendered this department during the war. For these important services the Board of Admiralty have promoted him to the rank of commander. - National Standard.

Six months later, Beagle set off in 1837 to survey large parts of the coast of Australia under the command of Commander John Clements Wickham, who had been a Lieutenant on the second voyage, with assistant surveyor Lieutenant John Lort Stokes who had been a Midshipman on the first voyage of the Beagle, then mate and assistant surveyor on the second voyage (no relation to Pringle Stokes). They started with the western coast between the Swan River (modern Perth, Australia) and the Fitzroy River, Western Australia, then surveyed both shores of the Bass Strait at the southeast corner of the continent. To aid the Beagle in her surveying operations in Bass Strait, the Colonial cutter Vansittart, of Van Diemen?s Land, was most liberally lent by His Excellency Sir John Franklin, and placed under the command of Mr Charles Codrington Forsyth, the Senior Mate, assisted by Mr Pasco, another of her Mates. In May 1839 they sailed north to survey the shores of the Arafura Sea opposite Timor. When Wickham fell ill and resigned, the command was taken over in March 1841 by Lieutenant John Lort Stokes who continued the survey. The third voyage was completed in 1843.
