He returned to active duty 5 March 1917 and was sent back to France on the HMAT "Benalla" joining the 53rd Bn at Zeitoun only to receive a severe GSW (Gun Shot Wound) to the neck and shoulder. He was sent to England to recover.At the end of the war he returned to Australia on the "Borda".
