DEATH OF MR ALEXANDER
CHRISTIE.
The death of a very, old resident of
the district in the person of Mr
Alexander Christie, J.P., occurred at
midnight on Monday at his residence,
South Hamilton. The late Mr. Chris-
tie, who had reached, the advanced
age of 87 years, was a native of
Garvald, East Lothian, Scotland,
and arrived in Melbourne in 1852 by
the sailing vessel Koh-i-nor. He fol-
lowed the occupation of carpenter for
some years until the passing of the
first Grant Land Act, under which
occupation licences were issued, when
in company with his brothers John,
Richard and Peter, he took up land
at Byaduk. The brothers were par-
ticularly successful in pastoral and
agricultural pursuits, and their names
have become familiar for their breed-
ing of high-class sheep. The deceased
also took an active interest in muni-
cipal affairs, being for many years
a member of the Dundas Shire Coun-
cil, of which he was several times
president. He retired about twenty
years ago, but up to, a recent period
he was an active member of the
magistracy. The late Mr. Christie
had been married three times, his
first wife being a Miss Fortune, who
had come out from Scotland, but
who, unfortunately, suffered death
from sunstroke. After some years he
married a second time, but was again
unfortunate in losing his wife. Then,
about 29 years ago, he married Miss
Euphemia Forsyth, sister of Mr. Wil-
liam Forsyth, of Rowchester Park,
and this lady survives him. He was
an intelligent and great reader, but
latterly the injury to his sight caus-
ed by a bush fire some years ago at
Byaduk, when his eyebrows and eye
lashes were severely burned, preclud-
ed his enjoyment of the daily paper.
Out of a family of six brothers and
three sisters Messrs. George Christie,
of Gray-street, and John Christie, of
Byaduk, and Mrs. Wm. Anderson, of
Koroit, are the only surviving mem-
bers. The funeral cortege will move
from deceased's late residence at 2;30
o'clock this afternoon for the Hamil-
ton cemetery.
