Obituary
WILLIAM HENRY FORSYTH
William Henry Forsyth, of Willoughby, passed to his reward on Tuesday, 2nd June, aged 70 years. He was the eldest son of the late Robert Forsyth, one of the pioneers of Willoughby, and of the Methodist Church in that, at the time, extensive circuit, and his passing ofrens the flood gates of memory.
His mother, just a bride, presided at a table at the tea meeting at the laying of the foundation stone of the first Willoughby Church, now called Chatswood South.
Later it was decided to hold evening services in a hall in Penshurst Street belonging to his grandfather, James Forsyth, and when the congregation grew too large to be accommodated there the church at Clanwilliam Street was erected on land donated by James Forsyth. Here, under the ministry of the Rev. T. R. McMichael, of hallowed memory, William Forsyth along with many others, saw the vision glorious, and immediately entered wholeheartedly into the service of the church. When he married and made his home in Forsyth Street adjacent to the church, it became his beloved charge. For 37 years he was secretary of the trust, and for many years rendered faithful service as local preacher and circuit steward.
His love of flowers and artistry with them found a loving ministry in adorning the church over a very long period.
He was a genuine Christian, true to the core, sincere as sunlight. He had all the homely virtues that wear and last arid never grow old and a constant unwavering faith.
As a friend he was staunch and steadfast, ever inspiring and never failing. He was not just a fair weather Christian ; he stood misfortune, hard knocks, head winds, and breaking seas, and kept on, facing all undaunted with a dogged perseverance and splendid courage. For his loved ones there was a delightfully tender solicitude; at all costs they must be protected. In. his latter years he oft carried comfort and courage to others in a doorstep ministry.
He knew. Whom he had trusted, and was persuaded that
He was able to keep
Surely he is among those who, having been tried, receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
Just prior to his death he was presented with a beautiful pencil sketch of the church he loved so greatly, and on whose altar so much of his life was laid.
Despite very heavy rain his funeral, which was conducted by the President of the Conference, was very largely attended. The Rev. M. K. Gilmour paid a tender and fitting tribute to his memory, and the Revs. W. N. Lock, M.A., B.D., and Colin W. Ritchie assisted in the service.
