WEDDING BELLS AT PENGUIN.
Barren-Forsythe.
(By "La Donna.")
THE Methodist Church at Penguin was
a decided centre of interest on
Saturday, Easter Eve, on the occasion
of the marriage of Beryl, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Forsythe, of Pen
guin, to Rev. Eric W. Barren, of the
Methodist Church, Eltham, Victoria, son
of the late Mr. Barren and of Mrs.
Barren, Sandy Bay, Hobart.
The ceremony was performed by a
trio of ministers, Rev. E. E. Barnard
being assisted by Rev. E. C. Bremer, of
Devonport (chairman of the Mersey
district), and Rev. A. Vineer, of Ulver
stone.
The church was decked with pink and
white flowers by Mrs. A. J. Edwards
and girl friends of the bride. A pro
fusion of pink belladonna lilies and
hydrangeas was used; and below a ca
nopy of pink and white, a white wed
ding bell hung from a floral archway of
pink hydrangeas, softened with aspara
gus fern.
Mrs. J. Yaxley presided at the organ,
and played "The Bridal March" from
"Lohengrin" as the bride en
tered the church. The service was
choral, the nuptial hymn "O Perfect
Love" and other selections being sung
during proceedings,
While the register was being signed
Mr. V. R. Byard, of Wynyard, ren
dered the solo, "Link Divine."
Motored to the church by her uncle.
Mr. Tim Smith, of Barrington, and
escorted by her father, who gave her
away, the bride, slender and dark-haired,
was a charming picture in her classi
cal gown of magnolia satin, modelled
on the close-fitting lines of Empire
style.
The bodice was rucked to the front,
and styled with a Peter Pan collar,
spoke-stitched to match the long square
train. Rows of tiny satin-covered but
tons were carried down the back of
tim bodice, and also trimmed the long
fitting sleeves, ending in small peaks
over the hands.
Thc bridal veil was magnolia tin
ted, and covered the long trnin with
'its cloud-like folds; and a lovely sheaf
bouquet was carried. Made, by Mrs.
Bramich, of Sunshine, Victoria (aunt of
the bride), the chosen flowers were
exouisite Christmas lilies, pink bella
donna arnd amaryllis lilies, white roses,
and Scotch heather. Gypsopbila and
fern lightened the blooms, the whole'
tied with long ribbons of magnolia sa
tin.
Dark-eyed Dorothy Vineer _ (Ulver
stone) was a sweet little train-bearer
in her ankle-length frock of magnolia
tinted net, posed over a satin slip, and
trimmed with dainty frills. A silver
ribbon banded her dark hair.
The bride knelt upon a bolster-shaped
cushion of rucked magnolia satin, fin
ished with long tassels of dusty pink
(made and presented by her aunt, Mrs.
Tim Smith, of Barrington).
Three pink-clad attendants followed
the bride. They were her sister, Miss
Doreen Forsythe; her cousin. Miss Rene
Smith (Barringinn), and Miss Mavis
Porteus (Edith Creek). They were
frocked alike in dusty nink matnna crepe,
made on long slim lines. The neck
lines .were marked with square yokes,
while slashed openings at the back
were fastened with diamente. Dainty
posies trimmed the left shoulders, and
silver shoes and hairbands were worn.
The trio wore gold dress rings (pre
sented by the bridegroom), and car
ried sheaves of pink gladioli and bella
donna lilies, lightened with trails of
asparagus fern, and sashed with pink.
The best man was Rev. Alan Mathew-
son, of Smithton, and the groomsman
Mr. McCulloch Smith, of Ulverstone
(cousin of tho bride), and Mr. Leith
Byard, of Wynward. Messrs. Fred
Harman and Neil Cox, both of Ulver
stone, were ushers.
As the bride left the church, amidst
showers of confetti, to the strains of
"Thc Wedding March" (Mendelssohn),
a white satin horseshoe, adorned with
pearls and orange blossom, was hung
on her arm by Miss Edith Ling. The
dainty token was of special sentiment,
having been sent from Greensborough
(Victoria) by a number of young well
wishers. For the traditional "some
thing blue" a pretty blue horseshoe
was presented by Miss Helene Bonhote,
and a slender lucky shoe by Cynthia
Willoughby.
A reception, followed by a wedding
tea, for which the Misses Lette catered
in excellent style, was held in the Me
thodist school room. Pink and white
streamers fluttered above the tables,
prettily decorated by Mrs. Brooks with
plumed asters, showery Easter daisies,
phlox, and fern. A wedding bell hung
above the bride's table, which held the
handsome cake of three tiers. Colored
magnolia and pink, it was made by
the bride's mother and decorated by
Mrs. J. D. Bramich (aunt of the
bride).
Mrs. Forsythe received in an ensemble
of navy floral marocain, with a navy,
hat; and carried a bouquet of rich
red roses, tied with matching rib
bon.
Mrs. Barren, the bridegroom's mother,
chose a black costume and a black hat,
with touches of mauve. She held a
posy of mauve statice, with streamers
to tone.
Mrs. J. D. Bramich wore a black and
white toilette, and red cactus dahlias
wore the flowers carried.
The customary speeches and toasts
wore honored, and numerous congratu
latory telegrams were read by the best
man. The wedding gifts, which inclu
ded several cheques, formed an impos
ing array, and testified to the popula
rly of thc young couple.
Later in the evening they were mo
tored by Mr. Ken. Weily to Burnie, cn
route to Melbourne, where the. honey
moon is being spent. The bride tra
velled in a smartly tailored costume, of
blue matelasse, with matching hat, and
a red waislcoat. Other accessories were
black, and the bridegroom's gift, a
gold wristlet watch, was also worn.
The future home of Rev. and Mrs.
Eric W. Barren will bc Ouyen, Vic-
toria.

Commander C. Codrington Forsyth, 1843. - Commander C Codrington Forsyth, lately promoted, entered the service in I827,and served the Jaseur, l8 guns, Captain Lyons, on the east coast of Africa, for the suppression of the slave trade. He then joined the Maidstone, 42 Commodor Sir C. M. Schombergh; from her he removed into the Warspite, 76, bearing the flag of Admiral Sir Thomas Baker. After serving in her a short time, he was appointed to the Beagle, surveying sloop, under Captain K. Fitzroy. Whilst in that vessel he assisted in the survey of the coast of South America, from the River Plate to Guayaquil, including the Falkland Islands, &c., and, in conjunction with two other midshipmen, surveyed a distance of 1700 miles of coast, in a small vessel of 14 tons, without any other assistance. He passed his examination for lieutenant in 1836, and joined the Pelorus, which proceeded to India, On this vessel's arrival on the station, a rupture being expected with the Burmese, he was detached with her boats to Rangoon, and, by his timely arrival, saved tho British Resident, Colonel Burney, and the masters of the Merchant vessels, from imprisonment. The Pelorus was then ordered to Australia and New Zealand. Whilst on these coasts, Commander Forsyth made many valuable additions to the charts by his surveys, and was sent, at the particular request of Sir J. Franklin, after a party of desperate convicts who had escaped from Van Diemen's Land; and after a narrow escape of his life, he saved part of them from destruction. In 1839 he again joined the Beagle, and for more than two years did the duty of lieutenant and assistant surveyor, in Command of her tender in the survey of Bass Straits, without receiving the pay of either officer, and was most handsomely recommended to the Admiralty by Sir J. Franklin and Sir James Stirling, for his services on the coast of Van Diemen's Land and Western Australia.
On the Beagle's return to England, in 1843, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, and appointed to the Helena, on the east coast of Africa, when he was continually away in command of her boats. On one occasion he captured an Arab slaver after some resistance, with eighty-two children on board, destined for the slave market of Muscat. In performing this service nine out of the pinnace's crew died from tile effects of fever. On the Helena's return from the Cape, the colonists being at war with the Kaffirs, the troop, in consequence of the drought and difficulty of obtaining supplies, were obliged to retreat to the mouth of the Great Fish River, where it was reported supplies might be landed, although it was much doubted from the heavy surf almost always prevailing on this dangerous coast. Lieut. Gen. Sir P. Maitland applied to the senior naval officer, Captain R. Gambier, for an Officer to superintend the debarkation of troops and stores, and survey and report on the coast, when Commander Forsyth was selected for this
service, from his knowledge of surveying and landing on open coast. On his arrival there he found the troops almost destitute of provisions, which he soon succeeded in landing in large quantities, which enabled the army again to advance against the Kaffirs ; for this service he Was strongly recommended to the Admiralty, and was officially informed by their lordships, through Rear-Admiral Dacres, that they had
made a favourable note of his name. On the arrival of Sir H. Pottinger and Sir G. Berkeley the troops again made a forward movement, when Commander Forsyth was requested to
proceed to the mouth of the Buffalo, and report as to the possibility of landing stores there. On his way thither with a small escort, he was nearly cut off by the enemy. At this place he was again successful in landing supplies under the most dangerous and difficult circumstances. He was repeatedly recommended through the commañder-in-chief, Rear-Admiral Dacres, for his valuable assistance and co-operation;and again by Sir Harry Smith, who states in his letters to Earl Grey, had it not been for the energy and perseverance displayed by this Officer in establishing these landing places, the army must have starved. He was also officially thanked by the admiral for his valuable surveys
Of this coast, and the commissary-general like-wise recommended him to the Treasury, for the valuable assistance he had rendered this department during the war. For these important services the Board of Admiralty have promoted him to the rank of commander. - National Standard.

Six months later, Beagle set off in 1837 to survey large parts of the coast of Australia under the command of Commander John Clements Wickham, who had been a Lieutenant on the second voyage, with assistant surveyor Lieutenant John Lort Stokes who had been a Midshipman on the first voyage of the Beagle, then mate and assistant surveyor on the second voyage (no relation to Pringle Stokes). They started with the western coast between the Swan River (modern Perth, Australia) and the Fitzroy River, Western Australia, then surveyed both shores of the Bass Strait at the southeast corner of the continent. To aid the Beagle in her surveying operations in Bass Strait, the Colonial cutter Vansittart, of Van Diemen?s Land, was most liberally lent by His Excellency Sir John Franklin, and placed under the command of Mr Charles Codrington Forsyth, the Senior Mate, assisted by Mr Pasco, another of her Mates. In May 1839 they sailed north to survey the shores of the Arafura Sea opposite Timor. When Wickham fell ill and resigned, the command was taken over in March 1841 by Lieutenant John Lort Stokes who continued the survey. The third voyage was completed in 1843.

ACCIDENTS AND OFFENCES.
David Forsyth, a child only 8 years of age,
was brought before the bench at the City
Police Court yesterday morning, charged as a
neglected child. It appeared from the evi-
dence of Richard Kenyon, a member of the
Salvation Army, that about seven weeks ago
a young man brought the little fellow to the
Salvation Army Barracks, and requested that he
should be admitted into the Rescue Home.
The young man explained that he had found
the lad playing about on the river, bank, and
was afraid he might get drowned. He brought
him to the Salvation Army people because he
did not wish to hand the boy over to the police
as a neglected child. Young Forsyth did not
conduct himself well in the Rescue Home. He
was remanded for a week to give the police an
opportunity of getting hold of his parents, who
are said to be residing in Ipswich.

The Brisbane Courier (Qld. : 1864 - 1933) Fri 26 Jun 1891 Page 2
ACCIDENTS AND OFFENCES.
........
It will be remembered that a few days ago a
small boy named David Forsyth was brought
before the City Police Court as a neglected child.
It then transpired that the lad had been found
by a person residing at Kangaroo Point playing
about on the bank of the river, and fearing he
might get drowned took him to the Salvation
Army officers, who took him to their Home, but
as he did not behave himself in a proper
manner there he was brought before the bench
to be dealt with as a neglected child. Mr.
Thompson, who has charge of the Boys' Home,
interested himself in the lad, and took care of
him pending the result of the proceedings.
The beuoh eventually found the little chap
"guilty," and ordered him to be detained at the
Industrial School at Lytton for a period of five
years. It was understood, however, that the sen-
tence was only a formal matter, and that after
certain formalities had been gone through the
little fellow would be " apprenticed out" to Mr.
Thompson, who had expressed a strong desire
to havo charge of him. At that time Mr.
Pinnock said he would issue a warrant for tho
arrest of the father, who had left Brisbane,
charging him with the desertion, and if the
police succeeded in finding him, he (Mr.
Pinnock) would see if he could not
make him pay for the support of
the child. Senior-constable Barber, armed
with Mr. Pinnock's warrant, found the
father, David Forsyth, on Wednesday morning
about six miles from Helidon and arrested him.
The father said, " I didn't desert him. I left
Brisbane because I had scarcely any clothes to
my back, or boots to my feet. As soon as I got
work and clothes I got a friend to write to
Brisbane about my boy." He also offered,
before being arrested, to give the senior
constable some money for the boy, but of course
the officer did not aocept it. He (the father)
was brought before the bench yesterday,
when he consented to an order being made com-
pelling him to pay the sum of 5s. 10d. per week
towards his son's support. He was discharged
upon signing the order.
