KNOCKED DOWN BY A TRAM.
Accident to a Child.
Amy Forsyth, aged 5, was conveyed to Prince Alfred Hospital this afternoon in a serious condition. It seems that about 2.40, this., afternoon she had occasion to go to the Enmore-road to purchase some articles for her parents, and when crossing the road was knocked down by a tram which had left Enmore terminus a few minutes previously. The child was wholly unconscious of her danger until the motor was but a few yards distant. Then she realised tier peril and made a rush to get clear of the line.
The driver of the tram, when he saw the child, endeavored to stop the motor, but he, like the girl, was too late, and she was struck by it, but fortunately was thrown clear of the rails. On being convoyed to the hospital it was found that she had sustained a compound fracture of the right arm, besides painful injuries to both legs.

Details provided by Jennifer Forsyth, daughter-in-law.
Andrew Whyte Forsyth was born with view of Stirling Castle on Christmas Day 1892. He played on the field of Bannockburn.
He worked in the Railway Clearing House as had his father before him.
He volunteered for service in 'Kitchener's Army' (they had an armband to show they were on standby).
2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders - from The Long Long Trail webpage.
August 1914 : at Shorncliffe. Part of 10th Brigade in 4th Division. Moved on mobilisation to York area (including Darlington and Strensall) before moving to Harrow.
23 August 1914 : landed at Boulogne.
He gained the rank of Lance Corporal in the Seaforth Highlanders - a bombadier using hand grenades rather than a rifle.
During WW1 he went 'over the top' once at Soisson. Andrew was sent back to England to train in the use of the Stokes Mortar
(weapon used in trench warfare - the 'shoot and scatter brigade') but never fired one after that.
Life in the trenches was terrible. Lice used to live in the seas of the kilt. One had to open the pleats and seams and sear with a candle to get rid of them.
There were decontamination centres to help with cleanliness.
After being hit in the eye with schrapnel and also suffering from trench foot, Andrew was sent to Lady Buller's hospital to recuperate.
It was during this time that he met his future wife who worked for Lady Buller. Andrew married Margaret Dice
(b Co Wexford, Ireland) on Christmas Day 1917at the Forsyth home at 5 Phillips St, Paisley.
After WW1 Andrew worked in Germany in the British Army of Occupation for a year on the railways.
He was billetted with an elderly lady. He sent home folding postcards of German castles on the Rhine and a rudimentary French phrase book.
He was discharged from the Army in September 1919.
They were persuaded by Andrew's sister Jean and husband Jack to also emigrate to NZ arriving January 1921.
The family was sponsored by a Mr Scott, a woodwork teacher at Petone Technical School.
Andrew and Margaret departed from Southampton 3Dec1920 for Wellington NZ per 'Ruahine (2)'. Andrew was aged 27 and a Clerk.
Margaret's first son Michael Bruce was born 4Sep1921 with James Andrew arriving nearly two years later on 17Aug1923.
Both boys were born at Petone.
Andrew had a clerical job in the gasworks at Udy St, Petone.
There was a strike there and he lost both his job and the house they were buying in Huia St.
Andrew never regained his clerical status after that. He worked until he was 65, mainly for the Railways doing track maintenance and other labouring jobs.
Up until the 1930s the family were staunch Presbyterians. A snide remark by a Presbyterian minister who looked down his nose at Andrew having a labouring job probably led to the family to becoming born again Christians. They heard Agnes Schloss speak and embraced her words literally.
Andrew had the first of several heart attacks at age 66 and died in Hutt Hospital in 1968 aged 76.
In Petone the family lived at 189 The Esplanade (the building is now gone), 40 Bolton St, then an upstairs flat in Pretoria St, Lower Hutt
(which they hated) and finally a little state house in Grierson St, Naenae, Lower Hutt.
Andrew is remembered by his daughter in law Jenny as a serious, earnest man, very strong in the Lord.
He was hard-working, always put in a vegetable garden wherever the family lived.
He was a man who liked his routine and would pace up and down until the evening newspaper arrived.
He only read the bible and the newspaper.
I have a photo of Andrew, his wife Margaret and Andrew's parents Michael Bruce and Helen Forsyth (nee Whyte).
There is also a photo of Andrew in uniform.
According to NZER Andrew was registered to vote in elections from 1928 to 1963 in Wellington NZ. | Andrew FORSYTH

One of the leading wheat growers
of that district was killed at East
Wickepin on Friday, last. The victim
was Andrew Basil Forsyth, aged 30.
He was fallowing with a big tractor
when he struck a boggy patch and the
implement turned over on him.
Though assistance was called by his
mother, it was not until midnight that
the body was extricated. He had been
married only five months.

An Appreciation of the Late Basil Forsyth.
(By Harold V. Fiesse.)
Writing from the Katanning Hospital, in which he has been an inmate
for some time, Mr. Piesse says:?
"The Late Basil Forsyth and his people were first known to me when they
resided at Woodanilling, and in later
years, I met them East of Wickepin
when I was representing the A.M.P.
Society.
"I was then impressed by the
amount of energy and knowledge
shown by this youth and the excel
lent manner in which he carried on
liis father's farm.
"1 had many opportunities of dis
cussing farming, finance and pur
chase of property with him, and he
posessed a marvellous vision of the
future operation of farming, very
few could bring their vision into practical use as this young man proved
himself able to do.
From time to time he increased his
holding, purchasing property in the
Jitarning district and I remember
him saying when we were all struck
with severe depression that he was
desirous of putting in a big crop,' al
though the price was very low at the
time. I remember he said to me:
'Well, Mr. Piesse, I must go on. If
1 stop putting in crop, I will go to
the wall.1 He showed a, true spirit
of progress and as he was such an
excellent wheat farmer, his returns
in the forthcoming , season were
splendid, and, in conversation with
him, he informed me of the large
cheque he had received from the
Wheat Bounty as provided by the
Government for that year.
During my travels in the South
east Province,. I have never met a
man altogether like Basil Forsyth.
He had a marvellous capacity for
work and it was well-known through
out the district how he worked day
and night on his faran. Also he had
a splendid business acumen which
helped him considerably in the purchase of a number of farms .he stood
possessed of at' the time of his death.
"I can imagine the proud thoughts
his Mother had of him, because ho
was of outstanding character, and
there are few men without capital
who had produced such large crops
of wheat in sq. few years.
"On many- occasions, I have dis
cussed his finance with one of the
financial ..institutions that assisted
him. At first they doubled his cap
abilities to carry on* but in later
years, this was dispelled by the result of his work and farming operations
"My sympathy goes out to his
young wife, and to his Mother, and
I would add that by his passing,
Wickepin, Jitarning and the Wheat
area have lost one of the finest type
of men, that ever lived in the district,
and his memory will live after hint.
It is a great pity that one in the
prime of life should be then such aa
he, because, no doubt had he been
spared, he would have accomplished
much."

NEW AMBULANCE WAGGON.
A new ambulance waggon for service in the Civil Ambulance and Transport Corpse was presented to that corps on Friday afternoon by Mr. Archibald Forsyth, of Randwlck, through the Lord Mayor. Mr. Forsyth, in a short speech, handed over the car, which was standing in front of the main entrance, to the Lord Mayor, requesting him to present it to the association. The Lord, Mayor, on behalf of the citizens, returned thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Forsyth for
the car. He saia that the corps was doing good work, and had come to the assistance of 24,000 cases in Sydney alone. Professor Anderson Stuart, president of St. John Ambulance Association, with which the corps is affiliated, also thanked Mr. and Mrs. Forsyth for their splendid gift. He quoted statistics to show that last year the corps travelled 14.000 miles in the discharge of its duties, and rendered assistance to 2000 cases. The car would be a great help in the good work, and was a most welcome addition to the corps. He only hoped the good example set by Mr. and Mrs. Forsyth would be followed by others. After an inspection bad been made of the waggon, which is handsome and splendidly ntted up, an adjonrument was made to the vestibule, where the Lady Mayoress enter- tained those present to afternoon tea. Among those present were Mr. Justice Cohen, Mr. R Anderson, and Dr. Lane Mullins and several other medical men and well wishes of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.

Forsyth, Archibald (1826?1908)
by Martha Rutledge
Archibald Forsyth (1826-1908), ropemaker and politician, was born on 10 March 1826 at Garmouth, Morayshire, Scotland, the ninth and youngest son of John Forsyth, carpenter, and his wife Helen, née Young. At 17 he reputedly worked on railway construction and later in the timber trade. In 1848 he migrated to Sydney and became a cedar-getter on the northern rivers where 'his fine stature' impressed his fellow axemen. In 1851 when gold fever struck he tried Ophir, the Turon diggings and then the Victorian fields. On 21 January 1854 he married Sarah Corbett in Melbourne. Later he seems to have been a sawmiller in Apollo Bay, and in 1862 he founded Forsyth & Anthony, general merchants.
Persuaded by the ropemaker James Miller, a boyhood friend, Forsyth sold out in 1864 and the next year founded Sydney's first 'rope and cordage' works on four acres (1.6 ha) at the corner of Bourke and Lachlan Streets, Waterloo. In 1868 he made his nephew John (1846-1915) a partner. Starting business at an expansive time in Australia's maritime enterprise, Forsyth had proved his product equal in quality and price to imported rope before free trade was established in New South Wales. By early 1875 the firm had a warehouse and offices in Kent Street and in 1876 A. Forsyth & Co. founded the Kangaroo Rope Works in East Brisbane. In that year his first wife died and on 24 October 1877 at Sandhurst he married Sarah Emmett.
In 1873 Forsyth was a founder of the committee of the Animals Protection Society; he was appointed a magistrate in 1875, joined the committee of the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts in 1878 and later he became a governor of Sydney Hospital. An 'ardent bowler', he was the founding president of the City Bowling Club in 1880-83, and also a founder of the Randwick Bowling Club.
In July 1885 Forsyth called a meeting to found a Chamber of Manufactures and as its first president drafted a constitution. The plan was premature and it collapsed, but a decade later his nephew John helped to found the permanent chamber. Retired from active business, Forsyth was elected in October 1885 to the Legislative Assembly for South Sydney as an avowed protectionist. He claimed 'he had been a Chartist' and favoured payment of members. He strongly believed that the shareholdings of cabinet ministers in public companies should be limited by statute, and introduced an unsuccessful amendment to the Arbitration Act, but a critic called him a 'bore of the first magnitude'. In September 1886 Forsyth became leader of the new Protection Union. He published many pamphlets and letters on the benefits of Federation and the protection of native industries. His 'conservative, careful policy of management' saved the firm in the 1892-94 depression. In 1894 A. Forsyth & Co. was turned into a private company with 65,000 £1 shares held by his relations. He was chairman of directors until 1897 when he visited Europe. In 1900 electricity and automatic spinners were installed in the Waterloo factory and production rose to over 1500 tons of rope and twine a year.
Well known as a philanthropist, Forsyth presented a new horse-drawn ambulance to the Civil Ambulance Brigade. In 1897 he published Rapara or the Rights of the Individual in the State, the history of a utopian settlement in the South Pacific founded on protection and land nationalization. Although the book was criticized in Liberty, it was 'admitted that Mr. Forsyth has the welfare of humanity at heart'.
Stern but just, generous and idealistic, he had his children schooled in Germany. In his last years Forsyth felt the heat and built an 'ice-room' in his house, Elgin, Randwick. He died there on 15 March 1908, survived by four sons and five daughters of his first wife, and by his third wife Harriet Grace Walker, whom he had married at 80. He was buried in the Congregational cemetery at Long Bay by a Presbyterian minister. He left £43,500 to his descendants and £625 to ten charitable institutions. A. Forsyth & Co. Pty Ltd was still on its original site in 1972.

Biography
Archibald was born on 4 June and baptized 14 July 1850, In Airdrie or New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland. His parents were James Forsyth and Agnes McDonald. [1]
In 1851 Archibald was living New Monkland, the youngest, 9 months old, of 5 children. [2]
In 1861 Archi is 10 years old, the son of James and Agens, born in New Monkland, living at San Burn in Muiravonside, Stirlingshire, Scotland. He is a scholar.[3][4]
in 1871 Archi is living with his parents, James and Agnes. He was born in Airdrie. Address is Gleabad farm in Muiravonside, Stirlingshire, Scotland and he works as a minor. [5]
On April 26, 1878 Archibald marries Agnes (Nancy) Irvine. His occupation is given as a draper and hers as a dressmaker. He is 27 and she is 29, both were living in Maddiston, Polmont, Scotland.[6]
Family Search tells us: Drapers, or linen drapers, used to be the supervisors of the makers of woolen and other types of cloth since only they were allowed to buy from the manufacturers or to import it. The wholesale draper (or dealer) would buy imported cloths from the merchants, and also British-produced goods from manufacturers in, say Manchester or Paisley. He acted as the middleman by reselling these to the retail linen drapers throughout his chosen territory in Britain, through his travelers (traveling salesmen). Hurley (The Book of Trades or Library of the Useful Arts. Vol III. Wiltshire Family History Society, 1994) lists the specialties of each of the manufacturing towns in 1818.[7]
In 1881 we find Archi and Agnes still living in Muiravonside, Maddiston, Stirlingshire and his occupation is still that of a draper. They have 2 children now, a one-year-old, my grandfather, and a three-week-old. This census says he was born in Watston, Larnark [8][9]
In 1891 Archi and Agnes are still living in the same place and they have 4 children, Archi is now a News Agent. and in 1901 we also find him here as a News Agent. I assume this was a person that sold newspapers.[10][11]
In 1896 Their 2nd son, John Irvine Thompson Forsythwas killed in a boiler Explosion. This news was reported in The Falkirk Herald and Midland Counties Journal, July 20, 1896 Page 4, 6th Col 'see son's profile'
1901 Census, Archibald and family are living at Lily Bank and he is employed as a newsagent on his own account, from home.
1911 Census finds Archibald with Agnes and 2 sons, Peter, 26 and Matthew 24/ They are living at Lily Bank, a home with 4 rooms that have 1 or more windows. He is a Newsagent, working on his own account. The 2 sons are Joiners. His other son, James had immigrated already. [12]
In 1916 their 4th son, Peter William Irvine Forsyth was killed at the battle of the Somme, Picardie, France. See Peter's profile for more information. 'see son's profile'
