The Muswellbrook Chronicle (NSW : 1898 - 1955), 1913, June 25 p. 2.
A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT. A terrible accident happened to Mr. Thomas Sims eldest son of Mrs Sims of Murrurundi. It appears that Mr. Sims was doing some work about his residence at Kamilaroi Millie, and while in the act of chipping galvanised iron with a chisel, a piece flew off and struck liim in the eye rather severely. Medical aid was sought as early as possible, and Mr. Sims afterwards proceeded to Sydney to consult a specialist. It was then discovered that the eye could not be saved, and an operation was necessary for its removal. The many friends of Mr. Sims will no doubt regret to hear of his misfortune.

The Victorian villa of Thornton Hall -
Penrith - New South Wales - Australia - was built by Thomas Smith c1870's.

Originally the residence of Mr Thomas Smith & his wife Jane (nee Laimbeer) and their family. The double story rooms at rear (R & L) were attached to the main homestead. Entrepreneur Thomas Smith and his son Hon. Sydney Smith were responsible for a number of firsts in Australia. Thomas Smith was the son of William Smith from Lancashire England. Todate, Thomas Smith's mother is still "unknown" .Thomas Smith came to Sydney Australia from Lancashire, on the ship "HOPE" in 1837-1839 or 1840 which he watched being built on the River Wyre. Although born in Blackpool, he possibly worked & lived in Fleetwood & Thornton-Cleveleys Lancashire.

Thornton Hall is located at 11 Mountain View Cresent, Penrith. The house was built in 1882 for Thomas Smith, a prominant local resident and was voted an Alderman of the first Penrith Council. His son Thomas Richard Smith was a local parliamentary representative being Member for Nepean in the Legislative Assembly from 1877-87, 1895-98, and 1901-1904 and elected Mayor of Penrith in 1889. The land on which Thornton Hall stood was originally 320 acres. Thomas Smith was a wealthy land owner who owned large sections of High Street. He also built and owned the Red Cow Inn. Thornton Hall was Thomas Smith's family home and on his death he left the property to his son, Sydney Smith. Sydney Smith also became a local parliamentary representative and served in Parke's last ministry as Secretary for Mines (1889-1891) and was also First Secretary for Agriculture from 1890. He was defeated in the elections of June 1898. In 1901 he was elected to the House of Representatives for Macquarie, and was Opposition whip in the first Parliament. Defeated in 1906, he retired to his estate, Thornton Hall at Penrith.

The property, was leased by Henry Lack from about 1910 and was used as a dairy. In 1941 the whole site, excluding the house was taken over by the Royal Army Engineers Depot. Thornton Hall was later subdivided to four acres and was sold by the Smith family to Read, who in turn, sold to Strong. The Commonwealth Department of Defence compulsorily acquired it from Strong in 1951.
The significance of the property, with its associations to Thomas and Sydney Smith certainly makes it of local and state significance. Thornton Hall is on the Heritage list for Penrith City Council, inventory no. Pb (6). Thornton Hall & its surrounds is listed on the Register of the National Estate No. 101114.

UPDATE Janurary 2015: on Thornton Hall Mountain View Crescent North Penrith.. Landcom/Urban Growth now own Thomas Smith's land after purchasing it from the Commonwealth Defence Department. The whole estate is now called " THORNTON ESTATE" where about 1,000 town houses are presently being built. Thornton Hall on it's own 1 hectare of land was sold by Landcom/Urban Growth, to Peter and Jackie Cipollone in September 2014. Peter Cipollone has committed to restore Thornton Hall to its c1882 photograph... ( minus the double story rear wings) .. the restoration is planned to start in early 2015. The heritage building is planned to be used as a Day Care Centre... the front rooms of Thornton Hall will be accessible to the public. This is a wonderful outcome for Thornton Hall which has been sitting derelict and empty for over 20 years.. sadly on the hill overlooking the land that made incredible history in Penrith in so many fields.... Long live Thornton Hall... With eternal thanks to Landcom/Urban Growth.. Penrith City Council.. Many dedicated residents of Penrith and Nepean, Memories of Penrith and the Cipollone family.
