THANGOOL FIRE.
INQUIRY AT WOWAN.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
In the early hours of the morning of February 22nd a fire occurred at Thangool as "a result of which a store, belonging to Mrs, Madeline Elsie Pratt, together with the contents, was totally destroyed. To-day an inquiry, conducted by Constable S. Rutter, was held before Mr. R. Power, P.M., from Mt. Morgan.
Mrs. Pratt gave evidence to the effect that she owned the shop and conducted the business, assisted by her husband when he was home. He was a cotton grower on Mr. K. Simmons' farm. On the morning of the fire her husband woke her up and she went for assistance. She estimated the value of the stock at the time of the fire at £380. There was also an ice chest, valued at £6 10s. She took stock in August, 1927, the value then being about £580. She could not say what stock she had purchased since or the amount banked. Practically all the contents in the residence were saved.
She lost about £25 in notes and £2 in silver. The shop was insured for £45 and the contents for £580, both with the Queensland. A fire assessor had inspected the place, but no offer
had been made and no insurance had been paid. She had signed four or five papers for the assessor. The stock was overinsured at the time of the fire, but not when the policy was taken out. Her husband had a wireless set in the shop and one at his camp. Her husband paid her in cash when he got goods. He was carrying a quantity of groceries on the morning of the fire when Constable Stapleton stopped him.
She owed £180 to Walter Reid and Co., £24 to D. and W. Murray, £12 12s. to David Halliday, £9 to Imperial Oil Co-, and £4 odd to Edwards and Murphy.
She had a credit balance at her bank.
When she left the shop on the night of February 2lst there were no signs of fire. She had never heard her husband was suspected of having set fire to the place. She could not say how the fire originated. Six cases of benzine were in the open, a short distance from the shop, and these had been removed.
Stanley Pratt, also known as "Nugget" Brett, and husband of the previous witness, stated he had about 16 1/2 acres of colton under cultivation. He corroborated his wife's evidence regarding the happenings, of the morning of the fire. A wireless set, which he valued at £45, had been burnt in the shop ; it was uninsured, ln all he had three radio sets. He assisted his wife in the store, but had never taken stock.
On February 23rd Constable Stapleton visited his camp as he (witness) was leaving with a bag on his back. This contained groceries which be was taking back to where the store had been. The constable took a note of the contents also of a loud speaker, one valve wireless set and a six-volt wireless battery. He bad taken thc goods to the camp three or four days prior to the fire, having purchased them. He had not paid for them, but would do so when he received cheque for his cotton. The humpy at his cotton patch was about a mile and a-quarter from his wife's place. He was at the store every night. He had brought stuff from his selection, which had been forfeited about six or eight months, and put it outside the store, covering it with a couple of sheets of galvanised iron. A man named M'Lachlan was never at his humpy with a dray, nor did he take anything from the store. He did not know how the fire originated Probably a "bumper" had been dropped into the straw in one of the cases. He had heard rumours that he was blamed for the fire. He owed a lot of money probably about £100.
Evidence was given by Daniel Conlon, commission agent; Denton Scholes general storekeeper ; George Albert miner and cotton picker ; and Jobi Thomas M'Dcrmott, gas engineer and cotton picker.
Constable Stapleton gave evidence as to making an examination of the debris of the fire. He detailed how he saw Pratt walking from his hut with a bag, which he examined. The
contents were very varied and were valued at £2 2s. Groceries to the value of £4 were also found in the hut, as well as a loud speaker, ear phone, four wireless batteries, six wireless valves with various other articles. The constable stated that Pratt said he had bought all the articles, that he did not have a docket, and that he had not paid for them. He gave as his reason for having the groceries that he in tended to camp in the hut and also intended installing wireless. Pratt stated he had sent a wireless set away to be repaired. Witness could not cometo any conclusion as to how the fire originated. He was of opinion that there were suspicions circumstances but he could not obtain any inform ation which would enable him to clear up matters.
The inquiry then terminated and the depositions will be forwarded to the Justice Department.
