The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate (Parramatta, NSW : 1888 - 1950) Wed 17 Aug 1898 Page 1
Death of Mrs. A. Newling.
Death removed on the 13th inst., Mrs. Catherine Newling, wife of Mr. Abraham Newling, of Smith-street, Parramatta.

The deceased lady was a well-known old Parramattan, being the daughter of Mr. John Byrnes, sen. Consequently she was sister of Mr. J. Byrnes (Parramatta North) and the late Mr. W. Byrnes, of Lennox Bridge. She was married at Parramatta at the age of 20 years; and of the 13 children that blessed the union, nine are still living among them being Mrs. A. Forsyth, of Pennant-street, and Mrs. W.S. Hughes.

Several sons of the family carry on now the business known as Newling Bros'., Smith Street, Parramatta.

Mrs. Newling, who was 56 years of age, was carried off after an illness which only lasted about nine hours, and her medical adviser, Dr. Waugh, certified that death resulted from apoplexy and paralysis. The funeral, which took place at Sherwood cemetery, Western-road, on Monday afternoon, was largely attended. The Rev. J. Penman conducted the service at the grave-side. Mr. W. Metcalfe had charge of the arrangements in connection with the interment. Beautiful wreaths on the coffin, had been sent by Major and Mrs. Ferris, Mr. and Mrs. J. Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. C. Champion, Mr. and Mrs. Dawes, Miss Abbott, Mr. Byrnes, Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Hughes, Miss Cornish and others.

After a protracted illness, the death
occurred on Saturday last of Mr.
Robert Bede Cashman, of the Royal
Hotel, Armidale, at the age of 55
years. The deceased was born at
Ulladulla, South Coast, and came to
Armidale several years ago. He imme
diately established himself a favorite
in the sporting community, and liber
ally assisted all codes, particularly the
Rugby League. The Cashman Cup,
for which keen rivalry exists, was pre
sented by the late Mr. Cashman. The
esteem in which deceased was held
was evident by the unusually large
attendance of friends at the funeral,
which took place on Sunday afternoon.
The Rev. Canon Riley conducted the
service, and also read the Masonic
burial service. Members of the Ma
sonic Lodge encircled the grave. The
pall-bearers were: Messrs. G. Susans,
J. Browning, and F. Antill (Masonic
Lodge), M. M'Lennan, J. Kelly, and
A. Faint (Armidale Bowling Club).
The deceased, leaves a widow, two
daughters (Mrs. Heagney, Misses Al
ice and Venda (Armidale), and one
son, Horace (Werrls Creek). Pid
dingtens conducted the arrangements.

FIVE WARRIOR BROTHERS.
Mrs .M. Shearer, of Ballarat street,
Yarrarville, has five sons who have re
sponded to the call. There are also
two younger sons who, although too
young to enlist, express their deter-
nuination to follow in their brothers'
footsteps when the opportunity pre
sents itself. Private W. Shearer an
Anzac, saw 12 months' service at Gal
lipoli and elsewhere, but was incapaci
tated by a very serious illness and was
invalided home. Gunner F. L. Shear
or, after 12 months' service on the
West front, contracted trench fever,
which confined him to hospital for
some time. He has recovered from the
attack and is back again in the
trenches. Whilst returning he met his
brother John, who is also serving on
the West front. Lance Corporal R. N.
Shearer, popularly known as "Bob,"
after being rejected on four or five oc
casions, succeeded at last in passing
the test, and has now rejoined his
brothers at the front. Private George
Shearer, who left Australia some five
months ago, became seriously ill and
is expected to return shortly. Mrs
Shearer also has two brothers and two
nephews serving in the colors.
Lance-Corporal "Bob" Shearer is
well and popularly known in football
circles-having been one of Yarra
ville's prominent players for years. In
writing to his mother, he encloses the
following verse:-
Fight for it, work for it, one of the
two,
It matters not which so long as you do
Your best to uphold it, and keep it
still flying
The flag of Australia that ever is try
ing
For right and for justice to answer the
call
For fairness to others aid freedom for
all.
