Obituary: WILLIAM DOUGLASS FORSYTH, QBE
A distinguished diplomat
William Douglass Forsyth, OBE, who died in Canberra on March 3, aged 84, was a distinguished diplomat who made major contributions to Australian foreign policy in the post-war years, notably in the United Nations and the advancement of the peoples of the South Pacific. He was a resident of Canberra for many years from 1942.
Bill Forsyth, as he was known, was born at Casterton in western Victoria. From Ballarat High School he entered the Melbourne Teachers College as a full-time student at the University of Melbourne, where he took first-class final honours in history and political science in 1932.
A Rockefeller fellowship took him to Balliol College, Oxford, where he took his B. Litt. degree, and wrote his book The Myth Of Open Spaces, which questioned the ability of Australia to absorb vast numbers of immigrants. From 1942 until his retirement in 1969 he was an officer of the Department of External (Foreign) Affairs in Canberra and abroad.
He was a member of the Australian delegation to the founding conference of the United Nations at San Francisco in 1945 and returned to become bead of the newly-formed Pacific Branch of the Department.
In 1947 he was appointed Counsellor in Australia's Embassy to the United States. Again a delegate to a long series of United Nations General Assembly sessions, he also represented Australia on the UN Trusteeship Council, charged with the advancement of the inhabitants of the UN Trust Territories, including New Guinea, Papua and Nauru.
Mr Forsyth played a leading part in the six-power South Seas Conference in Canberra in 1947 which established the South Pacific Commission, and a year later was appointed the commission's first Secretary-General, resident at Noumea, for a three-year term.
From 1951 to 1956 he was Australia's Permanent Representative at the United Nations in New York, involved in all aspects of its work.
On return to Canberra he served as an Assistant Secretary in External Affairs and then as Ambassador to South Vietnam and Minister to Laos, and once again, from 1963 to 1966, as Secretary-General of the South Pacific Commission. His last post was Ambassador to Lebanon.
He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1955.
Bill Forsyth is survived by two daughters, Katherine and Valerie, and a son, Julian.

Obituary
WILLIAM HENRY FORSYTH
William Henry Forsyth, of Willoughby, passed to his reward on Tuesday, 2nd June, aged 70 years. He was the eldest son of the late Robert Forsyth, one of the pioneers of Willoughby, and of the Methodist Church in that, at the time, extensive circuit, and his passing ofrens the flood gates of memory.
His mother, just a bride, presided at a table at the tea meeting at the laying of the foundation stone of the first Willoughby Church, now called Chatswood South.
Later it was decided to hold evening services in a hall in Penshurst Street belonging to his grandfather, James Forsyth, and when the congregation grew too large to be accommodated there the church at Clanwilliam Street was erected on land donated by James Forsyth. Here, under the ministry of the Rev. T. R. McMichael, of hallowed memory, William Forsyth along with many others, saw the vision glorious, and immediately entered wholeheartedly into the service of the church. When he married and made his home in Forsyth Street adjacent to the church, it became his beloved charge. For 37 years he was secretary of the trust, and for many years rendered faithful service as local preacher and circuit steward.
His love of flowers and artistry with them found a loving ministry in adorning the church over a very long period.
He was a genuine Christian, true to the core, sincere as sunlight. He had all the homely virtues that wear and last arid never grow old and a constant unwavering faith.
As a friend he was staunch and steadfast, ever inspiring and never failing. He was not just a fair weather Christian ; he stood misfortune, hard knocks, head winds, and breaking seas, and kept on, facing all undaunted with a dogged perseverance and splendid courage. For his loved ones there was a delightfully tender solicitude; at all costs they must be protected. In. his latter years he oft carried comfort and courage to others in a doorstep ministry.
He knew. Whom he had trusted, and was persuaded that
He was able to keep
Surely he is among those who, having been tried, receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
Just prior to his death he was presented with a beautiful pencil sketch of the church he loved so greatly, and on whose altar so much of his life was laid.
Despite very heavy rain his funeral, which was conducted by the President of the Conference, was very largely attended. The Rev. M. K. Gilmour paid a tender and fitting tribute to his memory, and the Revs. W. N. Lock, M.A., B.D., and Colin W. Ritchie assisted in the service.

IN MEMORIAM.
FORSYTH - In sad but loving memory of my
dear cousin, William Forsyth, who died at
Budgong 16th December, 1898.
Good and gentle was thy lifetime,
Christ has died to set you free,
Wait a little, dearest Willie,
And we soon will follow thee.
Death's cold band can never part
The friends united there ;
There are no sad or aching hearts
In that bright land so fair.
Inserted by his loving cousin, Jane Forsyth,
Bolong.

FORSYTH- GOODGER.
A very pretty wedding was celebrated at the Nowra Methodist Church on the 14th January, by the Rev. E. Thomas, when Mr. William Richard Forsyth, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Forsyth, of Budgong, was married to Miss Annie May Goodger, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Goodger, of Cambewarra. The church was tastefully decorated for the occasion. The bride entered the church on the arm of her brother, . Mr. P. Goodger, who grave her away. The bride wore an ankle length frock of ivory crepe de-chene, the beautifully embossed veil was held in place with a coronet of orange blossoms. The bride carried a sheaf of pink and white carnations, snapdragons and asparagus fern. The bridesmaid, Miss Ivy Goodger, cousin of the bride, looked very charming in an ankle length frock of pink georgette with hat to match, and
carried a sheaf of pink roses and asparagus fern. The best man was Mr. Jim Forsyth, brother of the bride groom. The reception was held at the Southern Bakery, where the guests were received by the bride and bridegroom's mothers, wearing frocks of crepe-de-chene and carrying posies of red gerberas. The happy couple left for Coffs Harbor, where the honeymoon is being spent. The bride's travelling dress was of navy blue, with coffee trimming, and hat to tone. The presents were numerous, and costly, and included cheques.

OBITUARY
WILLIAM RICHARD FORSYTH
(Brother of Mrs. F. Sawtell)
The residents of Berry
received a severe shock, on Monday, 4th January, when the sad news became circulated of the sudden passing of Mr. William Richard Forsyth, a very well- known and respected citizen of the community.
He was only 48 years of age, and it would have been difficult to have found a more healthy looking or robust type of man and consequently his demise was a shock to his many friends.
A man of outstanding physique,"Dick," as he was familiarly
known to all, was an out standing sportsman, and excelled in wood-chopping in this State for many years, and the three brothers, Jim, Dick and Alf , have figured prominently
in competitions throughout the land.
Dick has competed successfully at the Sydney Show, while he has many trophies won at country shows and carnivals.
He was also a very good member of the Berry A. and H. Association and a valuable steward for the wood-chopping
section, where his long experience was a big help to the committee in organising that portion of the annual show. He
was very keen on agricultural shows, and though he had
resigned from the committee, he was still a keen supporter of the association.
He was also a good cricketer and played successfully with
Burrier and Berry a few years ago.
The very large funeral, which moved from the Berry Methodist
Church, which faith he fervently followed, was a striking
tribute to the esteem, in which, he was held by all section of the community.
He is survived by his sorrowing wife, and one son, Jim and
one daughter, Gladys, to whom the deepest sympathy is extended in the loss of a devoted husband and father.
He also leaves his mother, and two brothers, Jim (Wollongong) and Alf (Berry), and four sisters, Madge (Mrs.
Colgrave, Gladesville) , Edith (Berry), Lily (Mrs. Sawtell, of Dorrigo) and Jean (Mrs. Weir, Berry), to whom we also ex
tend our sympathy.

IN THE WORLD OF WOMEN
WING-FORSYTH
Wedding at St. John's
The wedding was celebrated at St.
John's Church, Launceston, on June 13
of Winifred Edna, fourth daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. W. Forsyth, Mayne
street, and Clement William, young
est son of Mrs. I. Wing and the late
Mr. John Wing, of South-street, Inver
may. The ceremony was performed by
Rev. W. Greenwood, and as the bride
entered the church, escorted by her
father, Mr. A.R. Gee played "The
Bridal March."
The bride was charming in a frock of
ivory corded silk. The cowl neck was
caught at either side with a silver clip,
and the full length sleeves hung
loosely from the elbow. The train, cut
in the frock, tapered to a point, and
over it fell a veil of tulle, which was
pleated to form a halo at the back of
the head, and held in position by a
wreath of orange blossom. A spray of
orange blossom was also worn at the
waist. Her bouquet was a sheaf of
pink carnations, asparagus fern, and
white heath, tied with ivory ribbon.
The bridesmaid, Miss Marjorle For
syth (sister of the bride wore a full
length frock of pale pink marocain,
with cowl neck and sleeves which fitted
tightly below the elbow. The fullness
of the skirt was given by two frills
at each side, and covered buttons met
the girdle of silk cord which was tied
at the back. She wore a hat of pink
velvet to match, and carried a bouquet
of pink carnations.
Little Ruth Kidd, the train-bearer,
wore a long frock of blue organdie, with
hat to match, and little Freda Ander
son, who carried the cushion, was
dressed in pink organdie, with hat to
match.
The bridegroom was attended by Mr.
Frank Reid, and while the register was
being signed Mr. Fred. Fry sang "Be
cause,"
As the bride came down the aisle two
horseshoes were hung on her arm, one
by Miss Flo Richardson, and one by
little Miss Shirley Wing.
The bride's mother wore a costume of
striped worsted material, and carried a
posy of violets. The bridlegroom's
mother wore a navy ensemble, and also
carried a posy of violets.
The bride was taken to the church
by Mr. P. Taylor, of Hobart (friend of
the family). After the ceremony the
guests were entertained by the bride's
parents at their home. The cake was
made by the bride's mother, and
decorated by Mr Yates.
The bride travelled in a tunic frock
of royal blue, with hat to match.
Mr. and Mrs. Wing's future home
will be at Stanley. | Winifred Edna FORSYTH

The Horsham Times,
A NEGLECTED LAD. SENT TO THE REFORMATORY. At the Horsham Police Court on Friday, before Meesrs J. Carroll and F. Williams, J'sP., a lad named Archibald Murdoch Forsyth, 16 years of age, was charged, on remand, with being a neglected child. Ser- geant Kennealy represented the police, and Mr. Power appeared for the father of the boy. The evidence of Robert Forsyth, a farmer, residing at Drung Drung, and father of the boy, was to the effect that he was divorced from his wife. About two years ago the boy was living with his mother, and he got the police to bring him to Nurrabiel, where witness was then residing. The lad cleared out, and returned to Horsham, but witness took him back again, and when he (the father) went for a trip to England he paid for his son's board and lodging at Dimboola. He took the boy home a fortnight ago last Saturday, but a week later he went back to Horsham, and galloped about the town on a mare, which he said was a racer. When at home he was uncontrollable, and he had taken his son home on four occasions after he had cleared out. Nobody could believe a word the boy said. Constable Black deposed to having known the boy for some years, and as far as he was able to judge he was incorrigible. He would not work, and when in Horsham slept in stables, lofts and outbuildings-in fact, he was a perfect nuisance. Witness did not know how he was treated by his father, who did not seem to have any control whatever over him. Asked if he had anything to say, the boy burst into tears. Mr. Power said that the best course to pursue was to send the boy to the Reforma- tory Schools, the only question to consider being the amount of the contribution required from his father. In the interests of the lad himself that was the best thing that could happen. The father was willing tp again take him home, but it was questionable whether he should be given. Sergeant' Kennealy thought that in the interests of the lad, it would be better to place him under the care of the Department for Neglected Children. In answer to the sergeant, the boy said that his father did not beat him, but would not give him clothes. Mr. Power said that if the bench con- sidered it was advisable to send the boy to the Reformatory Schools, the question for consideration was as to his maintenance. The lad was big enough to work, and that should be taken into consideration. Mr. Williams said that it would be very unfair to burden the State with the boy s maintenance. Mr. Carroll pointed out that the moment a child was sent from the schools to work he ceased to be a neglected child and the 'maintenance contributions were discon- tinued. No boy would be sent to a place to work unless the authorities were reason- ably certain that he would stay. The father said that if the bench liked he would take his son home and give him another chance. It was decided by the bench to commit the boy to the care of the Department for Neglected Children, and the father was ordered to contribute 7s 6d a week towards his maintenance. It was apparent, the Bench added, that the father was incapable of controlling the boy, for whom the only suitable place was the Reformatory Schools..
Although an unruly Child, Archibald was not forgotten and was a beneficiary of his Father's Estate, when he died nine months later on 19 August 1904..
Archibald enlisted twice during World War 1..
No. 1 Enlisted AIF at Bendigo on 20 Nov 1914, #683, Private 3rd Reinforcements, 9th Light Horse. Embarked 29 Jan 1915 and disembarked at Cairo on 4 May 1915 on the 'Ceramic' and arrived in Melbourne on 25 May 1915, medically unfit, suffering with Lumbago. He was discharged on 28 July 1915.
No. 2 Re-enlisted AIF at Port Melbourne on 28 Jul 1915, #1897, Private 2nd Reinforcements, 29th Battalion. Religion R/C. Occupation: Independent Means. He was declared a Deserter from 18 August to 18 December 1915 and embarked 29 December 1915 for Egypt. Disembarked at Suez 31 January 1916. On 12 April 1916, whilst suffering from Myxoedma ("A disease caused by decreased activity of the thyroid gland in adults and characterized by dry skin, swellings around the lips and nose, mental deterioration, and a subnormal basal metabolic rate"), he embarked at Suez on the 'Karoola'. On 12 May 1916 he disembarked at Melbourne. During the intervening four months before being discharged as Medically Unfit on 12 Septemner 1916, he went AWL on three occasions. On the last occasion he was charged with 'Having the badges of rank of sergeant he not being entitled to same'..

"Referring to the death of Mr. Joseph Forsyth, which was recorded in Tuesday's issue, our Noradjuha correspondent writes :-The late Mr. Forsyth came from County Down, Ireland, and landed in Melbourne when 14 years of age. He then travelled to Koroit, in the Warrnambool district, and as a young man of 23 he came to the Wimmera and selected land at Oliver's Gully, four miles east of Noradjuha. He was a hard worker in his young days, and a very successful farmer and grazier. He was honest and respected as an old resident of the Noradjuha district. General sympathy is extended to the daughter, Mrs. C. W. McDonald, and sons (David and James) and all the family, who are good citizens of the district.".

Notes say adopted by Thomas Todd Later Commander Leonard Forsythe
Leonard Forsythe had the title BEM - British Empire Medal
The British Empire Medal (BEM), officially the Medal of the Order of the British Empire for Meritorious Service, is a British medal awarded for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the crown. While recipients are not technically members of the Order of the British Empire this honour is nevertheless affiliated with it. Recipients are entitled to put the letters "BEM" after their name. The BEM was awarded in similar circumstances to the Order of the British Empire, but usually to people below management or professional level. In the uniformed services, it was awarded to non-commissioned officers of the armed forces,

Snapper Island History
Snapper Island is the smallest island in Sydney Harbour. Located south west of Cockatoo Island, this rocky outcrop was declared a public recreation reserve in 1879.
The island was leased to the Cockatoo Island dockyard for additional storage during World War I. In 1930 the tiny island caught the eye of Leonard E. Forsythe who was able to persuade the Commonwealth Government to lease it to him for a peppercorn rental of £15 per year. His vision for the island was to create a training depot for boys in nautical skills.
Around 50 cadets, known as the Navy Sea League Cadets, worked to transform the island into a land-based ship. The lantana that covered the island was cleared and it was flattened by blasting an estimated 1,000 tonnes of rock from the top over an eight-month period. The island also grew by about 1,000 square metres through land reclamation. The stone sea walls of the island were sculptured to create the shape of a ship with a bow (pointing towards Drummoyne) and a stern (pointing towards Cockatoo Island).
The name given to the new facility was the Sydney Training Depot - named as a memorial to the famous Australian cruiser which had sunk the German raider Emden during World War I. Items salvaged from HMAS Sydney when it was stripped on Cockatoo Island in 1932 formed the basis of a collection of naval artefacts and memorabilia.
In 1932 building work commenced on a signal station, wharf and the other main buildings that can be seen today. The layout of these buildings models the layout of a naval ship. The cadets also planted the two cabbage-tree palms, which are still the only vegetation left on the island.
Training provided on the island was broad and varied, including rowing, sailing, seamanship, boat maintenance, signalling and rope work, rigging, radio operations, first aid, cooking and marksmanship.
Today Snapper Island is a collage of makeshift waterfront buildings in tin and timber, slipways, boat storage, gardens, flagpoles, a jetty and its two distinctive cabbage palms.
The island is currently closed to the public.
In 1879 Snapper Island was declared a public recreation reserve but it remained a rarely visited rocky outcrop. The island was leased to the Cockatoo Island Dockyard for additional storage during World War I. From 1931/2 Snapper Island was flattened and expanded by blasting and reclamation to set up the training depot (Sydney) for naval cadets and so fulfilling the vision of Leonard Forsythe, a founder of the Navy League in NSW. The stone seawalls created the shape of a ship with a bow and a stern. Building work commenced on a signal station and other buildings. The names and layout of buildings and structures on the island model that of a naval ship. The Navy League Sea Cadets salvaged many items from HMAS Sydney when it was stripped at Cockatoo Island in 1932. This collection forms the basis of a museum, opened in 1952, which still exists on the island. It contains an extensive range of naval artefacts.

Martha Rosewall Forsyth, born in 1875, daugther of Thomas Todd Forsyth and Ann Lile Lewis, had a child in 1894 when she was just 19 years of age, and 11 years before she married David Clarke in 1905. Her son born in 1894 was Leonard E Forsyth. Leonard died 16 Feb 1981.
Leonard's wife was Beatrice Maude Huddlestone born 3Q1898. There is no marriage for them in NSW BDM, but I now know why. I looked up his WW I war record which fills in some of the puzzle. When he enlisted his next of kin was his mother Martha Clarke (nee Forsyth) living in North Sydney. But Martha died while he was away at the war, on 14 June 1917. He completed a change of next of kin form and his records were also changed to show his next of kin as his wife Mrs Forsyth (no first name recorded) at Lake Place Hoylake Cheshire England. So he married an English girl while in England. This is the Beatrice Maude listed in this file. She died 1962 at Chatswood Registration Number 1148/1962.
Leonard was still alive and living in Drummoyne in 1968 as he wrote to the Army Records Office re his age service pension.
There is only one descendent, a daughter Beryl Maude who married Edward Newburn in 1950.

MALDON MURDER - 1984
A Victorian policeman was committed to trial on the 20th of March 1984, on a charge of murdering another officer. The Castlemaine Coroner, Mr Adams, SM, sent Senior Constable Leigh Michael Lawson, 27, for trial on a charge of murdering Senior Constable Lindsay James Forsythe at Maldon, near Castlemaine, on June 22. Senior Constable For syte's wife was also committed for trial on d similar charge. Mr Adams said the evidence suggested Mrs Gaylc Barbara Forsythe, 33, was an accessory before the fact. He found that Senior Constable Forsythe died of a haemorrhage from a gun shot wound inflicted by Senior Constable Lawson. "1 further find that Leigh Lawson and Gayle Forsythe did murder Lindsay James Forsythe," Mr Adams said. Both Mrs Forsythe and Senior Constable Lawson told the court they were innocent. Bail was formally refused. The court was told on Monday that the couple had an affair while Senior Constable Lawson was relieving at Maldon police station in January last year. Police alleged that Mrs Forsythe helped Senior Constable Lawson leave a deserted farmhouse after he was seriously wounded in a gun battle with Senior Constable Forsythe. Dr Jeffrey Mander of Bendigo, told the court that Senior Constable Lawson had been hit by at least three bullets. A ballistics expert, Senior Sergeant Jim Pattison, said the fatal shotgun blast had been fired from between 1.5 and two metres away from Senior Constable Forsythe. The .38 police service revolver in Senior Constable Forsythe's hand had contained five spent cartridges and one empty chamber.
