Inquest.
On Saturday last the Deputy Coroner (Mr. W. W. Lookwood, J P. held an inquiry at the Federal Hotel, Wallendbeen, into the cause of death of Mary Doris Forsyth, which occurred near Wallendbeen the previous day.
The following evidence was taken : ?Sen. constable Kilner deposed : At about 9 a.m. on Thursday, 11th instant, from something I heard I went to Effgrave's railway crossing, and saw a train which was pulled up there ; I saw in Effgrave's house the deceased, Mary Doris Forsyth ; I saw that her left arm and right leg were completely severed; first aid was being administered to her by Mr. Walter King; I then went to the scene of the accident on the railway line, eighteen yards from Effgrave's crossing on the north side, I picked up the hand and arm ; forty yards from the crossing I picked up the foot and leg ; the deceased died at 12 noon on same date ; Dr. Florence was then in attendance ; I at once communicated with the coroner by wire, and subsequently furnished a report, which I produce.
Eliza Effrave deposed : I am gatekeeper at level crossing 244 miles 41 chains from Sydney ; on the morning of llth instant I was down the yard taking in clothes, I heard the train whistle and I came up to look if everything was clear and safe for the tram, the gates were securely shut ; I also noticed both signals were down for the train both the home and the distant; I saw the tram approaching; I am quite sure it was not a quarter of a mile away. I turned round and went back to the house after seeing that all was clear ; I just went into the room and over to the table when I heard as I thought a boy call out ; I stepped outside the door again, and just as I did so I saw a pony attached to a sulky over the gate, its hind legs being on top of the gate ; I noticed there were two children in the sulky ; I remember nothing more until I saw the train passing with the sulky in front of it ; the train was slowing down when it passed me, and when it stopped the brakevan was at my house ; I saw the deceased lying underneath the breakvan; she was then taken out by the guard, and was brought into my house, where she
was attended to until she died; the gates were in perfect order.
Roy Alton Forsyth, who is not of age to understand the nature of an oath, made the following statement : On the morning of the 11th February I left home about 8.10, driving a sulky coming to school ; my sister Mary and Tory Wicks were with me; when we got about 100 yards of the railway crossing the pony shied at a cart with a tarpaulin over it, which was standing in the middle of the road ; she started to bolt, and went straight along the road, towards the gates ; I stuck to her until the wheel hit a stone and I fell out ; the pony then went on towards the gates without any one holding the reins ; my sister and Tory Wicks were still in the sulky ; I am 10 years of age.
Joseph Ogilvie deposed : I am an engine driver on the railway in the employ of the Commissioner for Railways ; on the morning of the 11th February I was running a special goods train from Cootamundra to Harden; on approaching the Wallendbeen up distant signal I challenged it with a whistle and found all the signals off, and coming in sight of the level crossing, which is between the home and distant signals, I found the gates allright for the train to proceed through them ; when about forty yards from the gates I noticed a horse in a sulky on the left hand side, about 70 yards away from the gates give a jump, and immediately rush towards the gates ; the lad that was driving appeared to pull the horse as though he were going to pull him into the fence, but the horse swerved down the hill again and the lad fell out and the sulky ran over him ; the horse rushed on at full gallop for the gate, jumping clean over it, and the sulky wheels caught the top bar of the gate and splintered it ; when the horse rose at the gate the engine was ten or twelve feet away from it ; the last time I saw the sulky it was when it disappeared in front of the engine ; there were two children in it ; I was doing all in my power at this time to bring the train to a stand-still by applying the air brake with full force, reversing the engine and opening the sand ; there was a 1 in 40 down grade at this point, and it took longer to bring the train to a stand than if it had been a lesser grade or on the level ; I never thought at anytime that the horse would attempt to jump the gates ; on bringing the train to a stand I immediately went back to find out what damage had been done, and I saw a little girl lying at the back door of the gatehouse; I saw that the right leg and left arm were taken off; I picked her up and carried her into the house and put her on a couch; I have no doubt but deceased was run over by the train; after passing the crossing I noticed apart of the sulky hanging to the left buffer of the engine ; the load I was drawing behind the engine was 511 tons, which was a full load ; the brakes were all in good working order ; after apply in the brakes with full force I brought the train to a standstill in about its own length.
Arthur Picton Thomas deposed : I am acting fireman in the employ of the Railway Commissioners on the morning of 11th instant I was firing on a train running from Cootamundra to Harden; on approaching the up distant signal at Wallendbeen the driver blew his whistle and challenged the distant signal ; the line was all clear for us, and the gates at the crossing were closed; the driver called my attention to a horse bolting on the left hand side of the engine; when I looked over I saw a boy thrown from the sulky on to the road leading to the gates about 30 or 40 yards away ; I saw that the driver was applying the air break, and I went and applied the hand break; I would say that the train was brought to a stand in about a train length; the driver left the engine to ascertain if anything had happened, and gave me instructions what to do in his absence; it was 9.5 a.m. when the accident occurred ; after seeing the boy thrown out of the sulky I saw nothing further.
Thomas King deposed : I am a guard in the employ of the Commissioner for Railways; on the morning of 11h February, 1909, I was in charge of a special goods train running from Cootamundra to Harden ; on approaching Wallendbeen I looked out to see if all the signals were off ; seeing them off I went into the van again ; immediately the brakes were applied hard; I looked out and could see what afterwards turned out to be portions of a sulky ; I knew by the manner in which the brakes were applied that something was seriously wrong. I saw nothing further until the train stopped ; I got down out of the van and saw a little girl outside the rails partly on her knees ; I assisted her on to her feet ; she told me to go and look for Mollie; I found deceased lying between the brake van and the last truck ; I lifted her out and car tied her to the gatekeeper's house ; I noticed that a leg and an arm had been severed ; I have no doubt but that she was run over by the train ; the accident happened at 9.5 a.m. Louis Patrick Forsyth deposed: I am a farmer residing at Bonnie View Wallendbeen ; the deceased, Mary Doris Forsyth, is daughter; on the morning of the 11th she proceeded to school, a distance of five miles, in a sulky driven by my son Roy Alton Forsyth ; this was their usual method of going to school; the deceased was aged eight years.
The Coroner found that Mary Doris Forsyth died from injuries caused by being accidentally run over by a train near 'Wallendbeen ; and he also found that no blame attached to the railway department.

SYDNEY, Monday.
A little boy named Stanley Forsyth, aged eight years, residing with his parents at Willoughby, put up a hammock yesterday on the verandah of the house. One end was made fast to an aviary. HOPE-JOHNSTONE - FORSYTH
Christ Church, Cootamundra, on Tuesday afternoon was the scene of a very pretty wedding, when Stella,
eldest daughter of Mrs. E. Forsyth, "Weerona," Temora street, was married to Olive, only son of Mr. and
Mrs. Hope-Johnstone, of Murchison (Vic.).
The church was tastefully decorated by girl members of the choir, of which Miss Forsyth was also a member.
The Rev. Sherris officiated, the service being fully choral.
The bride, who was given away by her brother, was charmingly gowned in a frock of cream crepe-de-chine,
and wore the customary wreath and veil. A shower bouquet of white rose buds, gloxinnia, and pale-pink sweet
peas completed the toilette.
Miss Myrtle Forsyth, sister of the bride, acted as bridesmaid, and looked dainty in a frock of mauve georgette,
with hat to tone. She carried a bouquet of pink rosebuds and maiden hair fern, finished with a silver lace collar.
The bridegroom was attended by Mr. Milton Mutch (cousin of the bride).
After the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's mother.
Later the happy couple left by car to tour the South Coast, the bride travelling in a frock of bois-de-rose crepe-de-chine, with hat to tone.

Tragic Death
A dreadful accident occurred on the Ashford Road, near the 19 mile peg, in the early hours of sunday morning last. It appears that Mr Phil Holder and Mr Sylvester Forsyth who had attended a dance held in the hall at Dinton Vale, on Saturday night, were returning home, both riding horses. When about the 19 mile peg, and whilst cantering quietly along, Mr Holder's horse stimbled and fell. The rider was thrown violently to the ground but to make matters worse, the horse rolled right on top of it's rider crushing him badly. Mr Forsyth immediately dismounted and went to his comrades assistance. He at once saw that the mate was in a serious condition, and that the weight of the animal must be removed from the unfortunate man's body. Luckily, Mr Percy Farnant drove up in his sulky, and with his assistance Holder was exctricated from his perilous position. Forsyth was horrified to learn that his companion was cruelly smashed and was unconscious. In view of this, it was decided to convey him to the Dinton Vale Hotel and telephone for medical aid. The injured man was accordingly lifted into the sulky and conveyed to the hotel..

A doctor from Inverell arrived shortly afterwards, only to diagnose the case as hopeless. The skull had been badly fractured, the right jaw broken and severe internal injuries inflicted. He never regained consciousness, and expired the same night. The fatality cased quite a gloom to descend over the locality. It was only recently that a young lady had been thrown from a horse in the same vicinity and killed, and for a second tragedy to happen so soon was too much for the nerves of the residents. The deceased was in the full bloom of manhood, being 24 years of age. He was the youngest son of Mrs M Holder, of Bukkulla and was a fine stamp of Australian manhood. He was extremely popular with all sections of the community and his untimely and tragic ending is to be deplored. He is survived by his mother, two brothers and 10 sisters. Their names are George Holder (Qld), Archie Holder (Bukkulla), Mrs W Thompson (Qld), Mrs J Thompson (Rocky Creek), Mrs T Marchant (North Coast), Mrs J Fermor (Mandola), Mrs W Hanson (Bukkulla), Mrs W Slattery (Scone), Mrs McLetchie (Murrurrundi), Mrs H Moffitt (Bukkulla), Mrs A Glanville (Sydney) and Mrs Sharp (Bukkulla)..

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock when the remains were laid to rest in the Dinton Vale cemetery. The cortage was exceptionally langeone, people from all parts of the district assembling at the graveside to pay their last respects to an estimable young son. the Rev C A Baker, Vicar of Ashford, recited the burial service, and also gave a brief address..

An enquiry into the cause of the accident will be conductedd by the Coroner (Mr Jas McIlveen) on Friday morning next. .

Sydney Morning Herald
The man who brought cafe society to town
July 18 2003
Chinese-born Mei Quong Tart spoke with a Scottish brogue, wore the tartan and his brutal beating in the newly opened Queen Victoria Building shocked the city. Steve Meacham traces a Sydney original.
Hewas, says biographer Robert Travers, "carried to the grave with all the pomp and ceremony befitting a state governor or a great statesman", with 200 men escorting the coffin from his Ashfield mansion to a train which carried the funeral party to Rookwood Cemetery.
There, thousands gathered to pay their last respects. Inside the coffin, the dead man cut a curious figure - dressed in the ceremonial robes of a Mandarin of the Blue Button, over which was draped his masonic apron.
Mei Quong Tart - known throughout NSW as "the Australian Mandarin" - had died, 11 months after being the victim of a murderous attacker who had battered him with an iron bar.
Frederick Duggan, a dim-witted thug, had been jailed for 12 years for the crime, which police believed was a simple robbery gone wrong. Not everyone agreed. Some wondered whether more powerful criminal forces had sponsored a political assassination.
On Thursday, the life of Quong Tart will be honoured in an evening of song and verse at the State Library of NSW, the first in a 12-month calendar of activities marking the centenary of his death on July 26, 1903.

Quong Tart was among the most colourful Sydney characters of his day. A Cantonese entrepreneur, he spoke with a thick Scottish brogue picked up on the goldfields. A pioneer of what we now know as "casual Sydney dining", he was a noted philanthropist who gave away much of his considerable fortune to succour the city's destitute. A solemn pamphleteer who sought to end his people's miserable dependence on opium, he was a keen amateur cricketer noted for his love of puns.
"He straddled both cultures, bridged both worlds," says Jennifer O'Callaghan, who is the curator of the Quong Tart component of the library's Heritage Collection exhibition. "He was the first Chinese person to be accepted and embraced by the wider community of NSW," she says. And all this at a time when sections of the Sydney media were working themselves into a frenzy about the so-called "yellow peril".
Quong Tart was born in 1850 in Canton, the son of a well-to-do merchant. Yet at nine he was sent to the gold diggings of Braidwood with an uncle. There he began working for Thomas Forsyth, a storekeeper from Argyllshire, who gave him an abiding love of things Scottish. In later life he would dress up in a kilt and recite Robbie Burns, earning him the nickname "Quong Tartan". But his big break came when he was adopted by Alice Simpson, wife of a local grandee, who was charmed by the Scot-sounding Chinese boy.
By the time he was 18, he was wealthy, having been encouraged by the Simpsons to invest in gold claims. He was also popular - a member of the local cricket team and a Freemason.
In 1871, he became a British citizen but his family wanted him to return to China. "His mother had found a nice Chinese girl she wanted him to marry," says O'Callaghan. Finally, he did return - 22 years after he had last seen his parents - but only to tell them that his future lay in Australia. Moving to Sydney, he set up a tea importing business in King Street and soon had set up chairs and tables where customers could try his tea. Sydney's first tea shop had been created. "In the Sydney of the time, you could eat food in a tavern if you were male, or you could go to expensive restaurants," says O'Callaghan. "There were no cafes or tea shops selling inexpensive food."
Quong Tart tea shops opened all over Sydney; at Moore Park Zoo; at the Haymarket theatre district; and in the best arcades. In 1889 he opened his grandest, the Loong Shan Tea House in King Street, a salubrious restaurant with marble fountains and golden carp in ponds. It quickly became one of the most important political meeting places in the city.
Three years earlier he had married a young Englishwoman, Margaret Scarlett. "Her family didn't approve," says O'Callaghan. "Her father, a business associate of Quong Tart's, didn't attend the wedding. Inter-racial marriage was considered shocking. They really were pioneers."
The couple had six children, but Quong Tart - an Anglican convert - had each of them baptised in different denominations to avoid charges of prejudice. He built a mansion, Gallop House, in Ashfield, and embarked on charitable works and political causes, culminating in his campaign to ban opium in 1887. After years of acting as an unofficial Chinese consul, his services were recognised by China's Emperor in 1894 when he was appointed Mandarin of the Blue Button - similar to a British earldom.
Four years later, he opened the Elite Dining Hall and Tea Rooms in the newly built Queen Victoria Building. He was in his office in the QVB when he was attacked in August 1902, a crime which shocked Sydney, partly because it seemed so senseless - his attacker got away with just a few pounds.
Letters from Chinese friends - translated by the library for the first time - indicate that many of them had suspicions. Some blamed "the Western people", others fellow Chinese businessmen whose interests had been damaged by Quong Tart's crusades.
"The letters reveal the factionalism within the Chinese community," says O'Callaghan. "They also show the library is interested in documenting all aspects of Australian life."

His reminiscences of early days were
Interesting, and he especially mentioned that it gave him great pleasure to be able to say that from among hls own
