124 EXTRACTS FROM THE BOOK "Lock Lomond to Australia 1862. The family of Peter & Jane Mc Intyre".

"Agnes Brodie was the first Australian born grandchild of Peter Mc Intyre andthe second of seven children of Daniel and Violet Brodie. Agnes was born in Ipswich on 10 mar 1863, a little over four months after her parents had arrived in
Queensland from Scotland.

After her father's accidental death in 1874, her mother took the family to live with her father, Peter Mc Intyre at "Benvolick" at Emu Creek. From "Benvorlick" Agnes, Jack Peter and Tean walk to the two miles to attend Emu Creek School as
first day pupils. among the other pupils were a number of children of the Davis family, including Richard and Arthur Hoey Davis. In July 1876, the family moved to The Siding, later Greenmount, where Violet opened a store. Tt may be assumed
that Agnes provided her share of assistance to her mother in the store as she grew to womanhood.

On 21 February 1885 in Greenmount, Agnes married her former classmate, Richard Davis and returned to live in a small cottage at Limestone. Richard had taken up his first appointment as a porter at Ipswich in March 1884. For several months,
Richard's younger brother, Arthur Hoey davis, boarded with the newly wed couple.

Around Noverber 1885 Agnes & Richard moved to Anthony, a siding 25 miles south of Ipswich, on the Fassifern branch railway line to Dugandan near Boonah, construction of which was completed in 1887. Agnes gave birth to her first four children
at Anthony siding - Thomas in 1885, Violet Christina 1887, Jack 1890 and Daniel Brodie in 1892. The June 1889 Railway Department report records that Richard as a porter was earning the (at least stable) wage of 1 Pound 16 Shillings per week
and was the first Office Keeper of the Postal Receiving Office operated from the station.

Not long after the birth of daniel, it was necessary for Agnes to establish a new home at Wallumbilla, near roma, where Richard was appointed stationmaster. His salary was increased to 120 Pounds per year but with the salary increase went
increased isolation.

Researchers of the history of the Bungil Shire indicate that:- ' Of Wallumbilla and Pickanjinnie settlemnts it might be said: "they sprung up in the night". It might also be said that no settlement began under less auspicious conditions and
succeeded. these heroic people encountered and overcame many difficulties: dropped off the night train in the heart of dense scrub: strangers in a strang place - no credit or anyone to advise or help them with the herculean task awaiting them
in the morning, and for many weary days to come.' Was it really any different for the wife of the newly arrived stationmaster?

Regardless of the nature of the country and the isolation, Agnes created a happy home environment in the railway cottage at Wallumbilla and in later life none of the family seemed to have any complaints of undue early hardships. The family
increased with the addition of richard in 1895, Mary Evelyne 1897, Agnes Jane 1899 and Malcolm Colin in 1904. The seven older children attended Wallumbilla school.

In 1905,after almost 13 years at Wallumbilla, the family moved to Miles. Agnes made a new home in the railway cottage where her ninth and last child Arthur Edward was born in 1906. The older children were starting their career in the railway
department and later all would be absorbed into the department in various positions. It would be understandable if Agnes grew a little tired of hearing all about the various "up" and "down" trains at family get togethers.

A further move in 1912 took Agnes to the railway stationmaster's residence in Allora when Richard was promoted to that position. In February 1917 her eldest daughter, Violet Christina who was not yet 30, died suddenly from heart attack while
visiting Drillham. Agnes must have missed her greatly as she had been her constant companion and a second mother to the younger family members.

Sadness again in 1918, when her son Daniel, who had enlisted in the AIF in December 1915, was killed in action inthe Somme River Valley in France on 29 August. The award, in January 1919, of a Military Medal for bravery in the field under
heavy shell fire in early August 1918, would have been little consolation to Agnes who would have undoubtedly preferred a railway sonalive in Allora to a dead hero buried in France.

Members of Agnes' family had married and she had six grandchildren by June 1921. Agnes died after a heart attack and was buried in the Greenmount cemetery next to her daughter Violet. Agnes with her busband Richard had stood by one another
through the good times and the difficult times of life and they were not to be separated for long. On 29 November 1924 richard died in Greenmount and was buried next to Agnes.

126 Extracts from the Book "Lock Lomond to Australia 1862. The family of Peter & Jane Mc Intyre".

"Daniel Brodie was born on 23 April 1870,. the sixth child of Daniel and Violet Brodie. He came to Greenmount with his widowed mother and family after the tragic death of his father in 1874 and he lived there all his life. When Emu Creek
School opened in 1875 and Daniel wa s pupil there.

He married Kate Forsyth, daughter of Robert and Mary Annie Forsyth, in 1896 and they had five children: Daniel, Lorna (Hogg), Effie (Meibusch), Bob and Violet (Kemp). Bob was killed in the Second World War. The family lived in a house called
"Kananga" which is now the Greenmount Post Office.

Dan went to Brisbane and learnt accountancy and business management and with his brother Malcolm took over the general store in Greenmount from their mother. The business continued to grow despite a severe drought in 1902 when farm production
was nil. Providing fodder for the stock taxed the farmer's finances to the limit and many had to be financed by the store.

In 1917 the new brick building which replaced the original stor was totally destroyed by fire. Although only 10 feet away the original building escaped damage. Another brick building was built which in later years was also destroyed by fire.
His son, Daniel, joined the business and took over the Nobby store and is well remembered with his International Harvster Company agencies.

A provisional school was opened in Greenmount on 10 Septmber 1901 after Dan made an application on behalf of the families of the area requesting one as some of the children had to walk 7 miles to a school.

He was very interested in all community affairs and was fond of sport an children. He would accompany the schoolboys' cricket team when they played at other schools. He always took a gread interest in his church.

Daniel worked in V. Brodie 7 Co's business until his sudden death on 4 November 1924. He is buried in the Greenmount cemetery beside his mother. It was a very sad day when he pased away so suddenly so young.

Kate moved to Brisbane and lived in Amelia Street. Cppr[arpp. where there was always a wlcome for visiting relatives and friends. She died on 23 March 1954.

130 XTRACTS FROM THE BOOK "Lock Lomond, to Australai 1862. The Family of Peter & Jane Mc Intyre.

"Jane Brodie was born at Tarbet on Lochlomond, Scotland on 30 June 1861, the daughter of eldest of seven children of Daniel and Violet Brodie (Nee Mc Intyre). Jane was only a baby when she and her parents migrated to Queensland in 1862, with
the Mc Intyre family and other Scottish Highlanders who came out on the "Ocean Chief" seeking work as shepherds. Jane's parents found employment in Ipswich and the family lived there until 1874. After her father's death Jane, as the thirteen
year old, came with her mother and family to live with the Mc Intyre's at "Benvolick" and where she kept house for them for a few years while her mother started at store at The Siding, later Greenmount. That store was the start of a thriving
business and was in the bands of the Brodie family for three generations, V. Brodie & Co., the heart and soul of Greenmount township.

Jane married John Charles Allen at "Benvorlick" in 1880 and reared a family of two sons and two daughters. They worked and lived in a cottage on "Woodlawn" on the banks of Emu Creek, East Greenmount where their children, Thomas, who died aged
2 years 7 months, Violet, thomas William, Catherine May and John Charles, were born.

"Woodlawn" had been settled in 1868 by Thomas Allen, John Charles' father, and together they bought "Allendale" when john, jane and family later lived. They carried on grazing, dairying and cropping for many years. and gradually increased
their holdings.

At one stage, they took up country which had been forfieted by other settlers and been retrieved by the Crown. The block was rough range country on the Dividing Range, miles from "Woodlawn" and civilisation. To fulful the residence
conditions, Jane, with her first toddler and pregnant with her second child, and her younger sidter Teanie went to live there, in a slab hut with a dirt floor. on their own for months on end. They were going through had times and husbane,
John, had to remain on "Woodlawn". He used to bring rations and visit them at weekends.

Thomas Snr, Great Grandpa, died at "Woodlawn" in 1923 and Grandad (John) and Granny (Jane) stayed on for a few years before retiring to Toowoomba. They suffered hardships and some good fortune and were evidently not afraid of work. Grandad
and Granny were b oth keen followers of sport, particularly polo, cricket, and football. Grandad's forte was polo, he was an outstanding horseman. One of Granny 's fravourite hobbies was to crochet, some of which grand daughter, Lal Turrell,
still treasures.

John died on 25 April 1938 aged 79 years. Both are buried in the family plt in Drayton/Toowoomba cemetery.

They were strick bu kind and understanding grandparents, and very respected by their grandchildren and held in high regard by their many friends. They were prominent workers for St. andrews Presbyterian Church whilst they lived in Toowoomba.
Theirs was alway an open house.

132 Extracts from the Book "lock Lomond to Australia 1862. The Family of Peter & jane Mc Intyre".

"John eason "Jack" Brodie was born on 2 June 1864, the third child and eldest son of Daniel & Violet Brodie of Arthur Street, Ipwich.

He attended school in Ipswich until his father's accidental death in 1874. Jack was a foundation pupil at Emu creek state School in 1875. At first he walked two miles to school from "Benvorlick" and later almost 3 miles from Greenmount. Not
all children liked school and as an older scholar, he had to find and return any runaway pupils.

Jack became a carpenter, serving his apprenticeship with Mr. John Maxwell of Ipswich. He went to Sydney to work for his Uncle Dugald Mc Intyre, travelling by train to Newcastle, the line from Wallangarra to Newcastle having been opened in
January 1888. He then went by boat to Sydney as there was no rail bridge over the Hawkesbury River until May 1889.

After Jack returned to Queensland he purchased on 15 March 1894. a 430 acre farm which had been on the northern boundary of Clifton Station. The only improvement was a boundary fence. The property is still owned by his son, Les, one hundred
years on. Jack built his own house and on 31 October 1894, he married Mary Jane Mc Kinstry. His son, Daniel William ws born on 7 october 1985, but sadly Mary Jane died on 3 November and Daniel on 21 December 1895. Both are buried in the
?Greenmount cemetery.

Jack continued farming thru a very difficult period. The house was cut in two and shifted to a more suitable site, becoming the kitchen of a larger home, "Waratah", which Jack built himself. On 27 March 1902 at "Springvale" Goomburra, Jack
married Agnes Gilmore. Their children were John Leslie, Daniel Norman, and Agnes Muriel (Wilcox).

Dairying was the main source of income with milk being taken to the Mt. Sibley cheese factory. During a severe drought in 1902, a large number of cattle were lost. Grain growing increased after 1921 when the State Wheat Board was constituted,
and a government guaranteed price announced. To reduce costs, most farmers bought a header which was pulled by 6 or 8 horses. Jack bred his own horses and at times had 40 to 50 on the farm.

His sons had purchased the adjoiining property, "Caledonia", and farmed "Waratah" as well after Jack experienced ill health. Jack took an interest in community affairs serving on the committees of Mt. Sibley State School and the Nobby
Presbyterian Church where he was also an elder. He was a trustee of the Greenmount Cemetery.

His wife, Agnes died on 31 January, 1927 and Jack died in toowoomba on 21 Jun 1949, aged 85. Both are buried in the Greenmount Cemetery"

"Malcolm Colin Joseph Brodie ws the youngest child and fourth son on Daniel and Violet Brodie. He was born at "Benvorlick:, Emu Creek on 4 April 1875. eight and a half months after his father's death.

He was enrolled at Emu Creek State School in 1880, walking there from Grenmount. After leasrning accountancy and business management, Malcolm joined his brother Daniel, working in the Brodie store and they took over its management when their
mother, Violet, retired in 1899.

In June 1899, Malcolm marrid Jessie Reid Maxwell, daughter of John and Elizabeth Maxwell (nee Wilson). Their family were Mac, a dentist in Gosford and Sydney, Ron, who had a store in Greenmount until forced to sell by ill health; Doreen, who
married Jack Lemon in 1925; Nell who married Rob Anderson in 1936 and who has lived in Monto all her married life; and Jock, who was a dentist in Tamworth and Hay in N.S.W.

The family grew up in a house called "Ardlui: (Still there) on the corner of Ramsay and Campbell Street, Greenmount. Malcolm built a two rink bowling green almost where the Bicentennial Park is today. He was a Cambooya Shire Councillor from
1914 to 1924.

V. Brodie & Co. conducted business in both Greenmount and Nobby and both stores had dual fuel agencies, Vacuum Oil (now Mobil) and Shell, with 2 x 4 gallon tins of petrol in pine cases as well as 44 gallon drums. Both branches traded in grain,
potatoes and pumpkins. A large sale of the Brodie Estate in Greenmount was conducted in 1906 by H.D. Davies & Co. Malcolm retired to Toowoomba in 1934 when his son Ron took over the Greenmount store.

After retiring, Malcolm and Jessie purchased a house at 42 Campbell Street, Toowoomba. A very keen bowls player, malcolm built a small green on which on which croquet could also be pllayed. He became one of the early directors of the Darling
Downs Building Society, which merged with the Toowoomba Permanent Building Society about 15 years ago.

Malcolm died on 24 December 1961, aged 86 years. Jessie passed away on 2 January 1964".

134 Extracts from the book "Loch Lomond to Australia 1862. The Family of Peter & Jane Mc Intyre:

"Peter Brodie was born at Ipswich on 12 July 1866, the fourth child of violet and daniel Brodie.

The family moved to Emu Crek after his father;s death. Peter was a first day scholar at the Emu Creek State School when it opened in 1875, at what is now East Greenmount.

One of his jobs early in life was looking after sheep watering at emu Creek. Without dogs and being on foot, it would have been a challenge just to keep apart the different mobs watering there.

He went to Sydney to his Uncles Duncan and Dugald Mc Intyre to learn the building trade. His Uncle Dugald was a partner in a building firm, "Jones and Mc Intyre". Peter became a carpenter and cabinet maker and attended night school to learn
trade drawing. The apprentice in those days cooked the builders their breakfast on the job, so it would have been an early start for Peter. It was when he was working in Sydney, that Peter married Margaret Forsyth at Greenmount in 1890.

After 13 years in Sydney, he left the building trade to come back to Queensland to become a farmer, firstly at Nobby on a farm know as "Ross Dhu", and next to his brother Jacks; farm "Waratah". When Eton vale was thrown open for closer
settlement, he took up land near Greenmount. He named his farm "Glengyle", which he farmed for some years before moving to Greenmount to continue in the building trade.

Peter and Margaret had a family of eight children, Violet, Flora, Edith, Colin, robert, Katherine, Nesta, and Peter. Colin was a first World War veteran and Peter was a prisoner of war of the Japanese in the second world Wor.

Peter and Margaret moved to Cecil Plains to help heir sons and aughter. Here Peter designed and build many of the buildings on his families' properties. His hobby in later life was building pieces of furniture for family members. These are
still cherished todayt.

Margaret died on 31 January 1949 at Thane and Peter died in Toowoomba on 24 March 1959, aged 92 years.

137 EXTRACTS FROM THE BOOK "Loch Lomond to Australia 1862. The Family of Peter & Jane Mc Intyre"

"Violet Christina, known as Tean or Teanie, was born on 19 Sept 1868. in Ipswich, the fifth child and third daughter of Daniel and Violet Brodie.

She was six years old when her father died and the family moved to Emu Creek to live with Tean's grandfather, Peter Mc Intyre. It was a happy living situation. However, her mother, a courageous lady, recognised she had to lean on her own
resources. In 1876, Violet opened a store in Greenmount (then known as The Siding).

Tean attended Emu Creek State School. For most of the time between leaving school and her marriage, she helped her mother run the business which grew and prospered. She was a slim, dark haired, brown eyed young lady with a bright vivacious
personality and loved by all. They were the days of ladies riding side-saddle and she was considered a fair horsewoman.

On Boxing Day 1894, Tean married Arthur Hoey Davis, who had been a classmate at Emu Creek school. The wedding ceremony took place in her mother's drawing room. Sh was given away by her Uncle Colin Mc Intyre and attended by Tottie Neal and
little niece Violet and Kate Allen. By all accounts it was a very pretty wedding. The bride looked charming in a soft white corded silk with long train, the skirt and bodice were draped with lace, caught with orange blossoms. A wreath of the
same flowers was worn with a brussels net veil.

After their marriage they lived at Clayfield w here three children, Arthur Lindsay, Vincent Gower and Violet Mary (Bradley) were born. Their fourth child Eric Daniel Drayton was born at Greenmount in 1908. Tean was a good cook, an expert
dressmaker and payed the piano to provide homely entertaintment for the family .

Arthur was employed as a clerk in the Sheriff's office. In his spare time he wrote, using the pen name of "Steele Rudd". In 1902 he was made Under Sheriff of Queensland, only to be retrenched in 1904. Writing then became a full time
occupation with much work being published over the years. He created Australia's most loved fictional household in "On Our Selection". Tean was very supportive and assisted in many ways with his writing.

Life became unsettled and the family had many moves. Firstly to Sydney in February 1907, the to Greenmount in Noverber of the same year. In 1909 they purchased a 160 acre farm know as "The Firs" on the corner of the Toowoomba-Warwick road and
Nobby road, now known as "Steele Rudd's Corner". Lin and Gower worked the farm until Gower enlisted in Ausust 1915 and served in the first World War.

The chain of events over the past years associated with much worry gradually took toll of Tean;s health and in 1917 the family returned to Brisbane. Tean's condition deteriorated and tragically in 1919 she was hospitalised, suffering a serious
nervous disorder. She died in Toowoomba on the 28 July 1952, in her eighty-fourth year."
